Click here Barnard College Update - Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016Dear Claremont resident: As we mentioned in our last update, we are excited that beginning in early December we'll start seeing the new teaching and learning center take shape as we begin construction of the steel structure. We have confirmed that the crawler crane that we'll use to build the superstructure will arrive on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3-4. Claremont Avenue from W. 116th Street to W. 120th Street will be closed to traffic and parking beginning early Saturday morning and should reopen around 6 p.m. on Sunday. Since Claremont Avenue will be closed very early Saturday morning and cars will not be permitted to park on either side of the street during the weekend, we recommend that you move your car before midnight Friday as towing will begin early Saturday morning. In addition to the street closure, the Barnard campus entrance at W. 119th Street and Claremont will be closed for the entire weekend. If you need to move between Claremont and Broadway, you can cross at either 116th or 120th. There will be more than 20 tractor trailers delivering the crane’s components over the course of the two days, starting at 8 a.m. Saturday. There will be representatives from Barnard, Turner Construction and the Department of Buildings on campus to oversee the delivery. TLC Rising To celebrate the crane’s arrival and provide more information on this phase, we are holding TLC Rising on Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Drop by the Milbank Courtyard for snacks and a special giveaway, and sign your name on one of the first steel beams that will be used in the construction. In case of inclement weather, we’ll be in The Diana Center Lobby. Construction Schedule Our schedule continues to be weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. You may notice a few days when masons will be staying later than 6 p.m. to finish smoothing concrete after a pour. That work, which is allowed by permit, should not be disruptive, although you may notice lights pointing downward to help illuminate the site. In addition, due to inclement weather, we will be working this Saturday, November 19th and may add Saturday, November 26th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The work will not involve drilling of any kind and there won’t be any concrete truck deliveries during these Saturday work days. Finally, we expect a large piece of equipment we’ve been using on the site to be removed sometime next week. We will send an email once the day and time has been scheduled. As you may remember from earlier updates, the Department of Transportation requires that overweight equipment entering or exiting Manhattan via bridges and tunnels be transported during the overnight hours.
