Some highlights of our meeting included hearing from local residents regarding the proposed cricket net lease at Elmwood Park. Our Board has approved the lease to the Old Boys Collegians Cricket Club following a recommendation from Council staff. We also approved funding for a number of fantastic community projects as part of our Strengthening Communities and Discretionary Response funds. Meet Community Board member David CartwrightIn this edition of the newsletter, we're featuring board member and chair, David Cartwright. David says his closest friends would describe him as approachable and always willing to help others. He'd like to learn a foreign language one day and some of his most defining moments in life including becoming a dad and completing the Coast to Coast. Board bats for Elmwood Park cricket netsA Christchurch cricket club has won approval for a new 20-year ground lease – covering 518 square metres – in order to install replacement practice nets in Elmwood Park. Community Boards draw up plans for the futureThe Waimāero/Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board Plan outlines plans for a shared footpath on Gardiners Rd, the replacement or upgrade of public toilets at Bishopdale Mall, and upgrade of playing fields at Tulett Park along with an investigation into the possible use of land next to the park. Subsidies now available for neighborhood eventsHave you ever wanted to organise a neighbourhood gathering? Perhaps you've always wanted to put on a potluck for the whole street? Summer with your neighbours is about bringing people closer together and celebrating the unique and diverse mix of each neighbourhood. Give underwater hockey a go at Jellie ParkDo you love the water and are keen to try a new sport? If that’s you, we’d love for you to come along to our underwater hockey ‘have a go’ session happening this weekend. This session is run by the Christchurch Underwater Hockey club and is happening this Saturday from 10 am to 12 pm at Jellie Park in the sports pool. The session is free but normal Jellie Park pool admission prices apply. Give it a try – you’ll love it. Building stronger, connected communitiesWhat does a strong community look, sound and feel like? How can we build connections to meet the new realities of our world? Council is revisiting its 2007 Strengthening Communities Strategy and wants your feedback on how we can build and strengthen community connections over the next 10 years. Metro Sports Facility – Aquatic Sensory ExperienceWhen Metro Sports Facility opens in 2022, it will be the largest aquatic and indoor recreation and leisure venue in New Zealand. It will include an Aquatic Sensory Experience. Let us know how you would like to use the space. New dates for The Walking FestivalWe have postponed The Walking Festival until 2021. The two week festival will be held between 17 April to 2 May 2021. Keep an eye out for updates on our Facebook.
