Preventing Eviction during COVID No images? Click here Hello Financial Opportunity Center Network, We hope you and your loved ones are all healthy and well. As the coronavirus pandemic continues, and as many of the relief benefits from the CARES Act have either ended or are set to end shortly (eviction moratoriums, the additional federal $600 benefit added to state unemployment compensation, student loan forbearances, to name a few) our communities are bracing for a potentially devastating wave of evictions and foreclosures. Prosperity Now's newly-released survey on the impact of COVID-19 on low-income households found that nearly 40% of lower-income households feel worse off financially as a result of the pandemic; and almost half of the households surveyed were unable to fully cover at least one basic expense, such as housing, food or medical care, because of COVID-19. These findings are sobering--and mean that our FOC work is more important than ever. Since Financial Opportunity Centers are on the front lines of helping their community members address both long-term economic stability and emergency needs, in this month's newsletter, we're highlighting a few housing-related resources in our spotlight feature. Additionally, we've heard from you all the need and interest in more coaching training. With that being said, LISC is pleased to announce our upcoming Introduction to Financial Coaching virtual training coming this Fall! Housing Stability during COVIDHousing stability is a broad, complex, and urgent issue that will require local and national action from a wide array of stakeholders, including policymakers, advocates, and frontline community-based organization staff. As we anticipate a quickly approaching housing crisis, LISC will work to gather and share resources on housing stability. This spotlight highlights a number of national resources. Recently, LISC hosted a webinar on "Preventing Evictions during COVID" (webinar recording & slide deck). This webinar, presented by Noëlle Porter, Director of Government Affairs by the National Housing Law Project, helped FOC coaches to understand current eviction policy and housing resources provided under the CARES Act and the tools needed to serve clients facing housing instability or homelessness. Also discussed were non-monetary solutions to impending evictions, and the resources we’re working to secure in the upcoming HEROES Act to better serve these clients. Housing resources vary drastically from state to state or even city to city, often making it difficult to share a compilation of resources. Just Shelter is an interactive map that attempts to do just that. By selecting a state you will view a list of housing-related community resources. The National Low Income Housing Coalition and Disaster Housing Recovery Coalition have also published research, State and Local Rental Assistance Programs: Finding Solutions for a Growing Crisis that digs deeper into what can be done at a local level. Other research & resources: Thank you! Thank you to our guest speakers from Citi Foundation and our FOC partners for their valuable expertise. |
