Wildsafe BC's Wildlife Alert reporting now linked from whistler.ca
Resort Municipality of Whistler Newsletter

You can now find Wildsafe BC’s Wildlife Alert Reporting Program linked from whistler.ca.

What is it?
It’s a mapping tool that provides updates on wildlife sightings and the response of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service and other agencies.

How can you use it?
Check the map for wildlife activity, encounters and responses by the Conservation Officer Service in Whistler or other parts of B.C. Species that are included are black bears, grizzlies, bobcats, cougars, coyotes, and more.

You can also sign up for email or Facebook alerts for specific alert locations (e.g. Whistler or your neighbourhood in Whistler).

Reminder: Bears are entering a phase of hyperphagia (excessive eating) to prepare for hibernation. Beware of heightened bear activity, secure your garbage, and keep your dog on-leash to avoid conflict with bears.

Report bear sightings in residential, school or daycare areas and in the Village by phoning the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277 or 604-905-BEAR.

Share your feedback on Whistler's free Saturday transit pilot program
Resort Municipality of Whistler Newsletter

The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) would like to hear your feedback on the free Saturday transit pilot program. Please take a moment to fill out the very short survey at the link below. The information you provide is confidential and will help aid future transit and transportation decisions in Whistler.

From July 30 to September 3, the Resort Municipality of Whistler operated a pilot program that provided free transit in Whistler on Saturdays. Transit was free on all routes from start of service until 6 p.m. the first two Saturdays and was extended until 8 p.m. the last four Saturdays of the pilot program.

Providing transit free of charge to riders on peak Saturdays was an initiative of the RMOW’s Transportation Advisory Group (TAG), which was formed to address and recommend strategies related to Whistler transportation issues. This pilot project was one aspect of testing new transportation strategies and practices in Whistler aimed at increasing transit ridership and reducing highway and parking lot congestion.

The pilot project was funded by the Day Lot Parking Committee (RMOW and Whistler Blackcomb), with the extra buses funded by the RMOW and BC Transit. The RMOW would like to thank Whistler Transit Ltd. for providing the necessary service levels to make the free Saturday pilot project viable.

Program aims to reel in invasive goldfish
Photo: Mike Crane

The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is teaming up with the Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council (SSISC) to deal with invasive goldfish in Whistler’s ponds and lakes. These unwanted pet goldfish have been let loose in Millar’s Pond and Alta Lake and are disturbing the water, aquatic plants and native fish, frogs and salamanders.

Invasive species are plants or animals that are not native to the area and cause economic, social or environmental damage. They do not have natural controls, such as insects, viruses, fungi and competing plants and animals to keep them in check, and they may grow rapidly and spread quickly, impacting other species.

The RMOW has an Invasive Species Management Plan and works in collaboration with the SSISC to protect native biodiversity.

Residents and visitors can be a part of the solution:

  1. Learn which species are invasive to Whistler.
  2. Report invasive species sightings. You can email Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council at ssinvasives@gmail.com with a photo or download a free app to identify and report invasive species anywhere in B.C.
  3. Stop the spread of invasive species.

Are you covered by flood insurance?

Flood insurance is now available in British Columbia, which may impact eligibility for Disaster Financial Assistance after a flood. As a result of this change, if a flood occurred in Whistler, an applicant who could have reasonably and readily purchased overland flood insurance would not be eligible for financial support under British Columbia’s Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) Program. The RMOW recommends checking with your insurance provider to determine if flood insurance is available through your home insurance policy.
