CPC STATEMENT ON POLICE BRUTALITY AND AAPI SOLIDARITY WITH THE BLACK COMMUNITY

The Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) extends our deepest condolences to the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, and demands justice be served for them and members of the Black community who have been victims of police brutality. We also urge the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community to stand in solidarity with the Black community. 

As an organization founded in 1965, CPC was established at the intersection of the Civil Rights Movement and immigration reform. Justice for the AAPI community is intertwined with justice for the Black community, as our rights are born out of both movements. The AAPI community cannot stand idly by when there is injustice against any community. 

As the AAPI community confronts the increase in anti-Asian discrimination and violence that has grown during the pandemic, we must recognize that our same fears of public scrutiny, retaliation, and abuse have long followed our Black neighbors. We must simultaneously confront racism against the AAPI community and anti-Blackness in any institution – not only the police but also education, healthcare, housing, employment, and more.  We must also work to address and undo anti-Blackness in the AAPI community. 

CPC remains committed to creating a society built on dignity and safety and to speaking out against hate in all forms.
