The composition of microbes in the human gut (the microbiome) has been linked to a number of diseases. But no study has looked at the microbiome across a range of diseases – until now. Claire Steves found that the same microbes crop up time and again across 38 diseases, suggesting that an increase in certain bugs could be a good predictor of our general health. Undoubtedly, over-the-counter poo-testing kits won’t be a long way off.
One thing’s for sure, if you live in the UK you’ll hear plenty of the unofficial football anthem, Three Lions, as England take on Croatia in the World Cup semi-finals tonight. Rio Goldhammer rates all of England’s football anthems since 1966, when the team last won a major tournament. Meanwhile, Noel Cameron explains how the England team are turning youth and inexperience to their
advantage.
The resignations keep flowing after UK prime minister Theresa May announced her Brexit plan. And with rumours of more to come, her position looks precarious. Tom Quinn explains the complex process of ousting and appointing Tory leaders.
