NEWSPAPER READERSHIP
TGI allows a deeper understanding of press readership:
- A third of adults in Northern Ireland read a newspaper every day - the same as in GB - and 45% read at least one a week. Total weekly readership is higher in NI at 81% compared to 75% in GB.
- Men are more likely to read newspapers - 39% do so compared to 31% of women. Members of the valuable 55 - 64 age group are 32% more likely to read a printed edition.
- 200,000 people (14% of all adults) visit newspaper websites and 100,000 visit them regularly. Those aged 25-34 are 50% more likely to visit and make up a quarter of the audience.
- Those who agree they would be prepared to pay to access content on newspaper or magazine websites are 40% more likely to be in the 15-34 age groups.
- 60% of newspaper readers value their local paper because it cover local news. More than half usually look through the free newspaper that are delivered to their home.
- The proportion of adults who read daily newspapers more for entertainment than for news has climbed from 20% in 2009 to 23% in 2010.
- When it comes to content, 50% of newspaper readers are very interested in the local news. Other popular areas include UK news (27%) and sport (23%).
- Some topics appeal more to particular age groups. Articles on cars & motoring are 75% more likely to appeal to 15-24s. Baby & childcare is 90% more likely to be of interest to the 25-34 age group.
- The majority of newspaper readers (58%) buy their paper from a local newsagent, 18% buy it from a supermarket, 16% from a petrol station, and 13% have it delivered to their home.
- A quarter of adults say that newspaper and magazine articles on holidays and travel influence their choice of holiday.
