Hello & Welcome

Tricia Eckels is the newest staff team member to join us.  A graduate of Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis, Tricia comes to us after teaching at another OPTION school, Tucker-Maxon in Portland, Oregon.  After a first meeting with Tricia, founding Principal Hilda Gregory told Director, Janet Weil, “That girl’s got spunk. Hire her.” And indeed she does. Tricia will be working with our tele-therapy students as well as having individual sessions with our children in classes.

Quite an Endeavour

A lovely evening was had by all who attended the 46th annual Endeavour Auction & Gala Dinner.  The highlight included the annual auction of the puppy which went for $5000 with all proceeds going to CHSC.

Transformation

Our First Words (Parent Guidance) Room is complete thanks to Romeo and Larissa Boar, parents of Grade 1 student Alex.  Along with Auditory-Verbal Educator, Loretta Richardson, they designed the beautiful, apartment-like space set up to simulate a home environment where families are learning how to help their children learn to listen and talk.

Larissa and Remeo then did all the construction and shopping to make it happen. We are very grateful to them and for funding from the Tzu Chi Foundation for transforming this room.

Please come by and have a cup of tea.

Talking Tip

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the amazing and enthusiastic parents for sharing their wisdom and delightful insights during our follow up parent education meeting; ‘Preparing your Child to be a Better Learner”.

This get-together allowed the families to explore and share helpful ideas in establishing a more positive routine at home.  The fun loving stories shared by the parents, generated helpful discussions and fresh insights.  Some of the insights included the importance of routine, down time prior to completing homework, educational television watching, achieving a developmentally appropriate bed time and so much more.

Thank you to everyone for attending and most importantly, sharing!  I look forward to our next meeting which will be held on January 11th, 2012.  See you then!

Watch for your special ornament to arrive in the mail.  It’s that time of year to be thinking about holiday gift giving.  Why not make a donation in honour of that hard to buy for person who has everything.  Send the ornament back to us along with your donation and we’ll hang your ornament on our tree.

Walk This Way

Thanks to the friends and families that attended the CHHA walk on September 24th at Jericho Beach in support of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association.  The Vancouver branch calls our Centre “home” as they meet in our gym the third Thursday every other month. They always have great speakers. It’s a marvelous opportunity to meet adults who are deaf or hard of hearing. They always welcome visitors, so please check with our office or look on the CHHA website for the next meeting date.
