WongAvery, in recognition of her lifelong contributions to education, community service, and dedication to creating meaningful change in the lives of others—particularly immigrants and underserved communities—on both local and national levels. Sally T. WongAvery, born in Hong Kong, graduated from San Diego High School, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and earned a Juris Doctorate from California Western School of Law. Fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, Hakka, and Toishan, she became a certified court interpreter and opened a law office serving low-income immigrants. Sally has dedicated her career to empowering communities through education and cultural preservation. As Principal of the Chinese School of San Diego, she expanded Chinese language and cultural programs, including a popular Chinese New Year celebration. She co-founded a Chinese bilingual preschool and the Chinese Service Center, which assists immigrants with acclimation, housing, and employment resources. Sally also co-founded the Chinese Historical Society of San Diego and served as the first female President of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association and Balboa Park’s House of China. Her contributions include establishing the WongAvery Global Languages and Culture Program and promoting international scholar exchanges. Her achievements have been recognized by Taiwan’s Overseas Chinese Commission, the California Legislature, and the U.S. Congress, among others. Sally’s legacy includes named honors at University of California San Diego, Cambridge University, and in Toronto, Canada. She enjoys traveling, collecting books, and spending time with her family.
