ELLA launches new apps for Year 1 and Year 2

Learning with the ELLA apps

The second year of the three-year Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA) F-2 schools trial is nearing completion. ESA has developed four new apps specifically for trialling with students in years 1 and 2. The Polyglots Go Camping is already proving to be very popular with Year 1 students. Set in a camping ground with tents, a campfire and games, it provides fun opportunities for children to revise greetings and to label family members (for example ‘grandmother’ and ’little brother’) in another language.

The Year 1 students at Karara State School ask and respond in French to questions related to possession or ownership, using tablet devices. They have been learning some first elements of French grammar, such as simple verb and gender forms, definite articles, pronouns and prepositions. The language from the apps is reinforced by practicing in small groups using hands-on materials.

Cutting-edge artificial intelligence lessons

This year the Digital Technologies Hub produced a range of artificial intelligence (AI) lessons for students from Foundation to Year 10. Lessons in AI provide rich real-world applications for students – engaging them with the Digital Technologies curriculum, drawing on ethical understandings and enabling critical, creative and systems thinking.

The Student Wellbeing Hub has launched new resources supporting teaching Relationships and Personal Development topics to students with autism. These resources are grouped into modules, and cover years 5–6, 7–8 and 9.
