Message from the Chief Nurse Midwifery Officer.

Welcome to the August 2016 newsletter.  Last month, we changed to an HTML format, which I hope you enjoy. This makes it easier to read, disseminate to others, and subscribe to.

In other news, I have just returned from the Garma Festival in North-East Arnhem Land.  Hosted and coordinated by the Yothu Yindi Foundation, Garma attracts an exclusive gathering of 2,500 political and business leaders from across the globe and aims to improve the state of Indigenous disadvantage by engaging business, political, academic, and other leaders of society to shape global, regional, and industry agendas. I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to attend the event. Admittedly, it was also lovely to escape the cold of Canberra's winter!  I have quite an extensive interstate travel agenda over the next few months, as well as some speaking engagements with the upcoming conference season. I look forward to speaking with you and meeting you at these events.

Targeted Call for Research — public call for research priorities in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) invites stakeholders and members of the public to submit research priorities in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, which could form the subject of a Targeted Call for Research. Information must be provided to substantiate the nominated priority and how the research could contribute to improved health outcomes. View the Research priorities in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health consultation document. The closing date for submissions is 4 September 2016.

Review of pharmacy remuneration and regulation

During negotiations for the Sixth Community Pharmacy Agreement in 2015, the Australian Government and the Pharmacy Guild of Australia made a commitment to conduct an independent Review of Pharmacy Remuneration and Regulation. The Chair of the Review Panel, Professor Stephen King, recently announced the release of the Review’s Discussion Paper. Written submissions in response to the Discussion Paper may be made until 23 September 2016. There will also be a number of public forums seeking input to the Review, which will be held in metropolitan and regional centres across Australia from 1 August 2016. You may now register your interest in attending a forum.

My Health Record hits four million!

The number of people with a My Health Record has surpassed four million, or around 17 per cent of all Australians. With a My Health Record, both a patient and their health care professional can immediately access important health information on-line, improving coordinated care outcomes, reducing duplication and providing vital information in emergency situations. Register or access a My Health Record.

Health Care Homes — governance

To support the introduction of the Health Care Home model during Stage 1, a two-tiered governance structure consisting of an overarching Implementation Advisory Group (IAG) and four specialised working groups, has been established. The role of the IAG is to work collaboratively with the department to provide advice on issues relevant to the design, implementation and evaluation of the Health Care Home model. The IAG will be supported by time limited working groups to help guide the development of core elements underpinning the roll-out of Stage 1 Health Care Homes, including payment mechanisms, patient identification, guidelines and training, and evaluation. There are several nurses involved with the various committees. Review the membership of the IAG and working groups here.
