Friday, 3/24When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: Hiking is a wonderful thought provoking experience that brings one closer to nature. It can be a terrific escape whether alone or with family and friends. The rhythmic march, the focus on your footing, the fresh air, and the goal of reaching the top are a wonderful combination for the brain. How many times have we worked out conflicts in our minds or found meaning on a trail? As I read the Beatitudes I wonder if clarity hit Jesus as he marched his way up the mountain. There certainly is a kind of walking pattern. Read them again. In the Beatitudes, Jesus teaches us that in order to achieve the kingdom of heaven, we must build our faith one step at a time. We need to work on these small ideals that speak of big results. How important these are in a period of great division. Jesus asks us to be humble, compassionate and purposeful in seeking love. As we trek up the mountain and reach the clearing, turn and look at that incredible view. That is what life is about. - George Belshaw
