A safer harbour for summer fun

We’re making progress to deliver a new Hampton Pier for the Sandringham community and it’s exciting to be able to share this news with the warmer weather approaching as we head into the summer months.

In the coming fortnight, contractors will set up a works compound to remove the old pier. The compound will be located between the carpark and old pier on the foreshore. This short project is expected to be completed in about six weeks and will be undertaken both in water (by barge), and from land.

We’re working to limit impacts to local traders and the community, but some access routes to the foreshore will be fenced off for safety (see red area in the map below). The good news is once the old pier is removed, the contractors will vacate the area to provide full access for summer.

Designs for new Hampton Pier

Progress is underway to develop final designs for the new pier. Parks Victoria is appointing a designer and once designs are finalised, we look forward to sharing a first look at the new Hampton Pier with the community.

Improved environmental outcomes at the harbour

The Sandringham Harbour Local Port Area Plan identified a need to makes changes to the current mooring ground for improved safety and functionality.

This spring the current moorings are being aligned to a new grid for improved navigation and efficiency. The existing mooring tackle will also be replaced with environmentally friendly moorings which are designed to avoid scraping and scouring the harbour environment and seagrass habitat.

The mooring improvements will be completed this month, and we look forward to improved outcomes for both vessel owners and our harbour environment.
