Greetings from your Community Board

Message from the Chair

Kia ora koutou,
I hope you are all enjoying the first sights of spring around our beautiful city. I urge everyone to jump online and give your feedback on Council's Strengthening Communities Strategy and the Aquatic Sensory Experience that's planned for the Metro Sports Facility.
I understand alert level two is a stressful time for many of you, so please don't hesitate to contact your community board members and governance team for advice and support.
Keep being  kind and look after one another. Kia kaha.

Highlights from our latest meeting

Our Community Board met on Monday 17 August. Some highlights of our meeting included approving funding for a range of fantastic community projects as part of our 2020/2021 Strengthening Communities Fund. We also received an update on the New Brighton Tiny Huts and considered options to install additional on-street mobility parking on Seaview Road, New Brighton. This report has been written in response to a request from a resident who raised concern about insufficient accessible parking in this area. You can read the minutes to see what else we discussed and find out the dates, times and details of upcoming Community Board and Council meetings here.

New home for cricket at Burwood Park

After many years of work, with fundraising and campaigning from the East, Christchurch Shirley Cricket Club Junior and Senior Committees, Burwood Park finally will have a home artificial cricket wicket for Juniors to play on. Thanks to the local Community Board, Canterbury Junior Cricket Association, Christchurch Metropolitan Cricket, East Shirley Parents and Christchurch City Council, the East side has another asset for sport.

The ground will be named after popular, and well known Christchurch Metropolitan Cricket life member, East Shirley and Christchurch sporting stalwart John W. Grocott, who passed away this year. His sons Tim (current ECSCC President and Shirley Boys High Principal) and David Grocott (Senior Head Coach for East Shirley and SBHS) put the shovel in the ground to get it all started. The pitch is on the old Burwood Bowling Club site.

Thanks to Andrew Robertson from ARconcrete and Chris Lewis from TerraFirma Turf for helping East Shirley get the project across the line. The concrete went down on 19 August, so the J.W Grocott Oval will be ready for use in February 2021, with everything going to plan.
