Purposeful and Collaborative Staff Development: Writing at Reidsville High School

ERG Newsletter Image

Purposeful.

Collaborative.

Committed.

Flexible.

These four words resontated when we sat down to talk with Allison Ormond, Instructional Coach at Reidsville High School, about her experience working with ERG on a job-embedded writing project.  Here are some additional thoughts from Allison about how ERG's service has impacted Reidsville High.

What have you liked best about ERG’s service?

ERG tailors its PD to meet our needs. Also, the coaches are able to suggest excellent resources that support the PD and move teachers forward in literacy instruction.  It's a very purposeful approach.

What part of the ERG process has been most effective for you, your teachers, and your students?

Without a doubt, the in-class coaching has been most beneficial.  Our teachers are able to receive immediate feedback that supports their instructional approach.  The feedback is non-threatening and opens up deep conversations about teaching and learning.  ERG coaches are committed to being an important support piece for our teachers.

I prefer the classroom coaching coupled with monthly PD sessions so teachers have time to reflect and contribute to the wider audience of the school.  Collaboration has been a vital component  of our coaching and PD sessions with ERG.

How has ERG helped you implement your vision for literacy instruction?

While ERG has served to concentrate literacy in specific subject areas like English, ERG has also helped our school plan and support literacy in all subject areas through PD, book studies, and classroom coaching.  Our coaches have been flexible in customizing PD to meet our specific goals.

ERG consultants are knowledgeable about CCSS and are able to articulate this to teachers and provide instructional strategies to meet the standards.  More importantly, ERG has helped us to drive home the importance of literacy for authentic purposes.

If you had to describe the ERG service and its coaches in a few words, what would they be?

Purposeful.

Collaborative.

Committed.

Flexible.
