South East Bridge News Update
May 2016

Welcome to the latest edition of the South East Bridge enews.

This month, we look at a variety of events from the past month, including this year's Pupil Premium Awards and a meeting with the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Art, Craft and Design in Education. Three schools presented their case for creativity in the curriculum, by showcasing the work they are doing to enhance pupil's learning through great arts and cultural experiences. We also hear from an Artsmark school in Hampshire, who had the pleasure of a visit from Canadian artists Robert and Birgit Bateman - one of their Year 7 pupils wrote to Robert asking if he would visit during a trip to the UK, and he gladly accepted the offer.

It's full steam ahead too, as we look forward with anticipation to the upcoming free network event in Winchester - STEM + ARTS = STEAM!

As always, our resources are available to download absolutely free of charge - simply register on the Artswork site for full access. If you tick the box to register as an ENYAN member as part of this, you will also be granted access to discounted rates on a selection of our upcoming professional development courses.

Thanks for subscribing and sharing the journey with us, as we endeavour to increase arts and cultural opportunities for children and young people across the South East region.

INSPIRATION | Artsmark school has visit from Canadian artists

On Thursday 19th May, Highfield School in Hampshire had the pleasure of meeting artist, conservationist and environmentalist, Robert Bateman, and his wife, artist Birgit Freybe Bateman. The pair were visiting the UK from Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, to deliver and present in person one of his wildlife paintings to the Royal Family.

The visit came about after a student in Year 7 wrote to Robert Bateman asking if he would like to visit Highfield whilst in the UK; he kindly agreed, and offered to lead a whole school assembly as well as taking an art masterclass in the afternoon. Bateman’s talk to the pupils emphasised the importance of putting technology ‘away’ and reconnecting with the natural world.

FOCUS ON: All-Party Parliamentary Group for Art, Craft and Design in Education

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Art, Craft and Design in Education is an informal cross-party group, run by and for Members of the Commons and Lords, with secretariat support from NSEAD.

The group believes that art, craft and design education is essential to the economy and to the cultural, spiritual, creative and social wellbeing of all; that it empowers individuals, enabling them to engage with our rich visual and cultural heritage, to express themselves and become visually literate and perceptive, and that access to high quality art, craft and design education is an entitlement for everyone.

Lucy Medhurst, one of Artswork’s Strategic Managers, attended the recent meeting on 3rd May, where Sophie Coles (NSEAD) presented findings from their recent report.
