Application Deadline: Monday, May 14Fishing is big business across the globe, to the tune of 167 million tons of fish harvested each year. What’s the catch? Our oceans are not a bottomless resource. The National Press Foundation is offering journalists a five-day deep dive into ocean health and sustainable fishing. Journalists will learn about commercial versus recreational fishing rights; innovations in
fisheries management; regulation and labeling of domestic and imported fish; natural and man-made threats to the oceans; international laws and disputes; and marine biodiversity. Training includes expert presentations as well as field trips on the Gulf of Mexico. The all-expenses-paid fellowship covers airfare, ground transportation, hotel costs and most meals. Illinois Watchdog Wins Stokes AwardThe Better Government Association, a nonprofit watchdog in Illinois, has won the National Press Foundation’s Thomas L. Stokes Award for Best Energy Writing. In “Power Struggle,” reporters Brett Chase and Madison Hopkins revealed radioactive leaks around nuclear power plants owned by Exelon and a reluctance by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to act on critical safety concerns. Deep Dive into Opioids ReportingLast week, the National Press Foundation took 15 journalists to San Diego for an in-depth training on the opioids epidemic. Fellows visited a California drug court, and speakers covered topics such as neurobiology, treatment, stigma and addiction. Following the NPF training, reporters attended American Society of Addiction Medicine's annual conference.
