News, views and analysis from the A/NZ tech sector No images? Click here Hi there, Yesterday’s figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, showing a record 992,000 Australians officially unemployed – despite 210,000 new jobs having been created last month – highlight the challenge ahead of us. But while the unemployment might be soaring – Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said this week that the real unemployment rate is 13.3 percent, twice the ‘official’ figure – it appears that demand for skilled workers remains, with a Hays survey showing 35 percent of employers are actively hiring. But there’s also a potential role for government in having more data-driven policy responses to unemployment, as highlighted in an SAP public policy paper. Utilising tech platforms and big data with better – different – data about the new, more diverse group of unemployed, could enable more individualised assistance and better marry jobseekers with industry needs, while stimulating the right employment opportunities in the right places, and at the right times.
