What is Splash Adelaide?

Splash Adelaide has been bringing new life and colour to our city’s streets and spaces since December. Jointly funded by Adelaide City Council and the South Australian Government, this innovative pilot program has given local business and the community a chance to try out some new ideas.

Splash Adelaide: Moving Forward

What else can you explore as part of Splash Adelaide this week?

Over the summer, Splash Adelaide has helped support pilot projects around the city that have allowed both businesses and the public to experience fun and interesting new ways to use public space.

Although the current round of Splash Adelaide projects finish on 31 March, in February, Council has endorsed three Splash Adelaide activation pilots to continue beyond the 31 March deadline, and they’re three pretty amazing projects:

• A trial parklet program;
• An extension of the street food vendor program;
• Continuing a partnership with UniSA throughout the semester.

So, if you’re interested in finding out more about these projects or how you can become involved, here’s what they are:

Big ideas in little spaces

The parklet program is when a road or a parking space is reimagined as a small park or seating area, sometimes for outdoor dining, but also sometimes as a mini park or to park bikes. These parklets are sponsored by private partners who are responsible for all design and installation fees, but seating remains free and open for any member of the public to use. Under this parklet program, businesses are provided with the permit to install a temporary parklet.

Ideas don’t have to be limited to outdoor dining or bike racks either, if you have a fun, creative parking space idea you want to implement it can become a reality with the parklet program.

Entrée, Main and Dessert

Lemonade street stall

The extension of the street food vendors project will allow both entrepreneurs and the public to experience a wide variety of mobile food businesses to trial whether they will work in the long term, plus spoil us for choice when it comes to our lunch menu.

This program will continue to encourage street food in the city, such as coffee carts, burger vans, and gourmet cuisine, giving the city's users new ways to experience food in the public realm.

The extension of the street food vendors project will continue to the end of December 2012, so if you’re looking for a new way to get your product onto the streets of Adelaide, whether it’s coffee, ice cream, dessert or a range of hot and cold food, this may very well be for you.

All About George

Splash Adelaide - George St

Splash Adelaide is partnering with the University of South Australia to temporarily test elements of UniSA’s City West Campus Masterplan 2020, such as the greening of George Street and making it a pedestrian area.

As part of Splash Adelaide, George Street has been closed to traffic. The university has already had a successful O-Week in George Street on Friday 2 March, with DJs, music and sports demonstrations, and temporary bollards will keep George Street closed until the end of June so that street can be programmed with stacks of other activities.

So to make sure you stay up to date with what’s happening with this project, join us on Facebook for updates.
