Dear Friends,

We hope 2016 is proving to be a positive year for you all so far. We have certainly started off the year with a whirlwind of activity, attending multiple exhibitions and launching a new product within the space of just a few months.

In February, at Photonics West, we were honored for Diamond PureOptics to be named a finalist in the Prism Awards. The following week, at SPIE Advanced Lithography, we introduced the potential performance gains that this exciting new optical material offers high power laser and EUV lithography applications.

More recently we exhibited at Photonix Japan and presented at EDI CON China on our diamond heat spreaders for thermal management of GaN HEMT hotspots. We also launched our latest electrochemical wastewater treatment technology reactor, Diamox, after a successful pilot program exhibited tremendous results in treating varied types of highly contaminated wastewaters. Read more on this exciting technology later in this newsletter.

In May we were also honored to participate at Quantum Europe in Amsterdam, where we showcased our nano-engineered synthetic diamond and its application to quantum information processing – below we introduce one of our Principal Scientists working with research partners in this emerging field.

     Best Wishes,

    Daniel Twitchen

WHY DIAMOX ENABLES SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE TREATMENT OF HIGHLY CONTAMINATED INDUSTRIAL WASTE WATERS

Element Six Diamox electrochemical cells offer engineers of wastewater treatment systems with a packaged, scalable reactor for easy integration into on-site Electrochemical Advanced Oxidation Processes (EAOPs).  Diamox contains solid, free standing boron doped diamond (BDD) electrodes for a solution that is:

Effective

  • Fully mineralizes dissolved organic compounds to treat effluents that are difficult or impossible to treat by conventional means
  • Chemical oxygen demand (COD) of effluent streams is reduced by over 90%, with a safe output for direct discharge into the environment
  • Operates at >20 times the current density of conventional electrode materials – making Diamox more compact whilst delivering higher productivity

Reliable

  • Unlike conventional electrodes, BDD electrodes are resistant to the hydroxyl radical, giving them a lifetime measurable in years
  • Highly resistant to fouling – operates in highly corrosive environments
  • BDD electrodes can be electrochemically cleaned

Convenient to implement, operate and maintain

  • Allows re-use or discharge of treated water directly from site
  • Operates at low temperature and pressure, with no need for UV or chemical additions - for simpler and safer processes
  • Can be applied to most types of effluents with dissolved contaminates, and in varied waste streams

MEET OUR DIAMOND SCIENTIST

Dr. Matthew Markham, Principal Scientist at Element Six Global Innovation Centre

Q: What is your role at Element Six?

A: I am a Principal Scientist at Element Six Global Innovation Centre based at Harwell, UK. My role is technical leader and project manager for diamond quantum technologies, where I work with a team of scientists and external collaborators to develop new diamond applications.

Q: In your opinion, what is the most exciting thing happening with Element Six CVD diamond?

A: Within my role at Element Six I am fortunate enough to be working on cutting edge technology to harness the unique ‘quantum properties’ of diamond, finding uses in magnetic imaging and quantum computers. Recently we have been working with Prof. Ronald Walsworth’s group at Harvard who successfully used diamond developed by my team to measure the magnetic signature of neural activity in a marine worm. This is a really exciting result as it lays the groundwork for a step change in neuronal network imaging, akin to MRI imaging used in diagnostics in hospitals - but with far greater resolution.

Q: What new applications of diamond do you see emerging in the next five years?

A: The application space for diamond quantum technologies is growing every year but I think we will see more diamond-based sensing technology emerging such as nanometer magnetic field imaging.

Q: Tell us something about yourself that people might be surprised to know??

A: I enjoy running and have done several half marathons as well as completing the London marathon. Recently this has taken a bit of a back seat to having a young family but I hope to do some more marathons in the future.
