Situation Report #2: Chattanooga, Tennessee

April 17, 2020

In the midst of uncertain times — and when people are thinking twice before leaving their home for any reason — it is quite remarkable to have so many Hope Force International (HFI) Reservists responding to the needs of tornado survivors in Chattanooga, Tennessee in the Easter tornado aftermath. Despite the climate created by Covid-19, we have seen (since Monday) volunteers from 12 states respond to the call for help.

The destruction caused by the Easter tornados is more disastrous than most people realize — with the number of people impacted much greater than was first expected. This will be a long and daunting recovery process for this community.  HFI is currently working in the heart of the impact zone, applying desperately needed blue tarps and roof repair to tornado stricken homes – along with seasoned Hope Force chaplains who are offering emotional and spiritual care. HFI utilizes FEMA-standard blue tarp methods — a critical first step in the recovery process.  This prevents further water damage and provides an opportunity for things to dry out — offering peace of mind to homeowners.  As of this writing, we know of no other agency offering this service, free of charge, to survivors.  (Homeowners are stating that their insurance companies are giving notification that it is up to them to get their own roofs covered due to the overwhelming need and lack of available contractors.)

Please continue to pray for all tornado survivors across the south — including the community and church leaders — and our HFI responders. It is a touching sight to watch as our team moves into a neighborhood to begin the process of serving with a great sense of privilege.  Survivors are often overwhelmed with gratitude — receiving a fresh breath of hope as they are beneficiaries of kindness and care — "love in action" on their behalf. There have been many tears of relief and gratitude shared among survivors and responders alike.  We are receiving calls, even today, asking for our help as heavy rains are predicted for the weekend.

Hope Force International is grateful to Silverdale Baptist Church for opening not only their facilities to us, but their hearts as well. The provision of a place to house our teams, prepare food and conduct administration is an essential provision that empowers us to do the ministry of compassion...which leads to hope.

Please consider how you might possibly participate with us in making a world of difference in these difficult times.

Thank you,
