Editor's note
|
It’s been quite the week at the ABC. First, managing director Michelle Guthrie was sacked, then came revelations that chairman Justin Milne had urged the firing of two senior journalists. Now Milne has gone too.
His resignation may have eased the pressure but it hasn’t solved the crisis. Serious questions remain about the ABC’s ability to fend off political interference. As Andrew Dodd writes, a wider discussion about ABC independence is a vital step in helping the national broadcaster get back to doing its job.
And – on a different note entirely – have you ever wondered what evolution and motorbikes have in common? There’s more than you might think. On the eve of a major charity ride, palaeontologist and self-confessed motorcycle obsessive John Long describes the 3.5 billion years of life on Earth in terms of a 3,500km ride from Perth to Melbourne.

The ABC chairman's resignation provides some resolution to the crisis, but a discussion is sorely needed about other threats to the broadcaster's independence.

The ABC Act clearly states the board is duty-bound to 'maintain the independence and integrity' of the broadcaster. Milne's actions appear to have compromised both values.
