Click here October 2020 Impact Newsletter CPC Staff and Community Members Participate in Day of Service on Election DayOn November 3rd, CPC staff participated in a Day of Service for Election Day to protect and advance the rights of our communities. CPC staff worked polling sites, provided information, served as interpreters, distributed surveys, handled hotlines, and monitored election activities across New York City. CPC also recently launched a nonpartisan initiative alongside 11 nonprofits to increase voter engagement, turnout, and power called NYC Nonprofits Turnout: A Voter Empowerment Project. EDUCATIONWe provide high-quality learning opportunities for all ages—from Pre-K and after-school enrichment to adult English language classes—because education is lifelong. CPC Literacy Student Testifies at New York City Council Immigration Committee HearingOn October 14th, CPC adult literacy student Lillian Kong spoke at the City Council Immigration Committee hearing to advocate for support of resources like English instruction for our city's immigrants. Adult Literacy Director Jeff Lau, along with the New York City Coalition for Adult Literacy, and Council Member Menchaca's office coordinated the testimony. Essential Worker Highlight: Raihan Mondal, Program Director of CPC Brooklyn Education and Career Raihan Mondal oversees all of CPC’s Brooklyn center-based youth programs. Raihan discusses his work in Brooklyn throughout the pandemic, as well as his support of the Resource Navigators initiative for individuals exposed to COVID-19. FAMILY SUPPORTWe make it easier for individuals and families to access personalized social resources because support is fundamental at every age. Essential Worker Highlight: Albert Li, Multi-Social Services Coordinator at Brooklyn Community Services Albert Li, CPC Multi-Social Services Coordinator at Brooklyn Community Services, helps community members access crucial resources and services, such as healthcare and food assistance. Albert shares his experiences working with CPC and the challenges he’s faced throughout the pandemic as Brooklyn Community Center adapted from in-person to online assistance. CPC Brooklyn Community Services Host Free Meal Distribution Throughout October, CPC Brooklyn Community Services partnered with Off Their Plate to provide free prepared meals to older adults as well as vulnerable community members in the face of the ongoing pandemic. Thank you to Zen Yai for preparing meals every Saturday! CPC Brooklyn Senior Services Participates in Virtual Alzheimer's Walk On October 11th, CPC Brooklyn's Senior Services participated in CaringKind's Annual Alzheimer's Walk to support research for a cure to combat the disease that affects so many older adults. Despite the ongoing public health crisis, our senior members and senior services team were out bright and early taking part in the walk in their own neighborhoods, safely distanced. CPC Provides Free Flu Shots to the CommunityOn October 2nd, CPC Brooklyn Community Services partnered with Walgreens to host a Free Flu Shot Clinic for the community. Each year, the flu varies in severity so it is imperative to keep oneself protected by getting an annual flu shot during flu season. COMMUNITY & ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENTWe empower New Yorkers to represent and to advocate for themselves and their communities because their leadership is essential for positive—and lasting—social change. We engage with individuals to plan and develop their career paths because professional success is critical for economic independence. CPC Project Reach Youth Highlighted on CBS New York 2 CPC Project Reach youth were featured in story about Spirit Day on October 15th, a day established in order to end bullying of LGBTQ youth. Levka Starkova and Andre England of CPC Project Reach, were interviewed by CBS New York 2. CPC Speaks at 'Break the Silence, End the Violence' Rally in Queens Mitchel Wu, Director of CPC Queens Community Services, joined elected officials and partner organizations to participate in the "Break the Silence, End the Violence" rally organized by the Korean American Family Service Center (KAFSC) on October 2nd, as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. CPC Hosts Virtual Town Hall "Pass the Mic: Partners, Advocates and CPC Staff Share Issues in Our Community" Council Members Carlina Rivera and Ben Kallos joined CPC staff for a virtual townhall on Thursday, October 29th. In addition to the elected officials, the townhall featured our own Jeff Lau, Stephanie Lee, and Brian Chen, as well as Vanessa Leung, Co-Executive Director of the Coalition for Asian American Children & Families (CACF), to discuss key issues facing our communities and possible city-level solutions. Chief Policy and Public Affairs Officer Carlyn Cowen Named to 2020 NYC 40 Under 40 Rising StarsCongratulations to Carlyn Cowen, CPC Chief Policy and Public Affairs Officer, for being recognized as a NYC 40 Under 40 Rising Star by City & State! They said that among their greatest joys is exposing people to advocacy – whether it’s an adult literacy student newly arrived in the United States or local youth. “To me, those are the moments of success.” Essential Worker Highlight: Shuping Deng, Supervisor of CPC ONA Opportunity Center Shuping Deng leads CPC's ONA Opportunity Center, an initiative funded by the Office for New Americans (ONA) that offers immigrants support with naturalization, citizenship, and legal services. She discusses heightened community fear and her efforts to provide resources and support for those who may need it. What is YOUR vision of the future for 70 Mulberry Street? On behalf of the Advisory Committee, we are encouraging our community members to participate in the community visioning process of rebuilding 70 Mulberry Street, a City-owned historic building that housed local organizations, including the CPC Chinatown Senior Center.
