We are already a month into the New Year! Have you been maintaining your resolutions to lose weight and get moving? Let’s take a look at why you may have started in the first place and if you’ve fallen into your old habits, how you can get back on track.
Healthy eating and an active lifestyle are more than just good suggestions, they are the building blocks to a foundation of well-being. It is no secret that there is an overwhelming obesity trend in the United States with more than one third of adults and 17% of children and adolescents qualifying as obese. Most of the leading causes of preventable death are directly linked to obesity such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Heart disease is the number 1 killer of women in the United States, claiming more lives than all forms of cancer combined.
If you have let your resolution take the back burner what can you do? The American Heart Association recommends obese patients participate in a medically supervised weight loss program two to three times a month for at least six months. The treatment plan for weight loss involves lowering calorie intake, getting aerobic exercise for 30 minutes most days of the week and learning the skills to change unhealthy behaviors. Talk to your primary care provider to determine your nutritional needs and resources for healthy eating. Visit your physical therapist to treat any injuries or conditions that may be keeping you from activity and exercise. Physical therapists can assist in promoting movement, reducing pain, maintaining or restoring function and preventing disabilities with a carefully designed exercise program tailored to you. Re-commit to your plan
and get moving towards the new you in the New Year!
