A Word from More Health

Happy New year from all of us at MORE HEALTH! We welcome 2015, and the many health and safety education opportunities that the New Year brings.

Last year marked our 25th anniversary and over 3 million students taught. In recognition of this milestone, Mayor Bob Buckhorn officially declared October 1st as MORE HEALTH Day during our 2nd annual fundraising breakfast! New inductees to our Ring of Honor were Mary Ellen Elia (Superintendent Hillsborough County Public Schools) and Dr. Michael Grego (Superintendent of Pinellas County Schools). Thank you for your continued support. You make it possible for MORE HEALTH to provide children, teens and adults with the tools needed to live a healthy lifestyle.

We look forward to seeing YOU at the 3rd annual breakfast celebration!

Left untreated, cavities and tooth decay can cause severe pain and difficulties eating, speaking and learning. Not surprisingly, toothaches are the primary reason children miss school. The good news is that dental carries are preventable.

Health Awareness for You

A human body can stay alive only when two processes take place every second of every minute, hour after hour, year after year. The circulatory and respiratory systems work together in order for our hearts to beat and our bodies to breath. The heart and the circulatory system carry the oxygen from our lungs throughout the body. These processes are so important for sustaining life that they are known as vital signs.

Choosing to live a healthy lifestyle goes a long way towards keeping our heart and lungs functioning as they should!

Florida's New Booster Seat Law

Effective January 1, 2015, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles says that children aged 4 and 5 years must use a child safety seat or booster seat when in a motor vehicle. It will no longer be legal to simply buckle them in with a seat belt. Seat belts do not fit children properly until they are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall, 80 pounds and between the ages of 8 and 12 according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Parents, consider this before utilizing seat belts only:
  • Is your child at least 4 feet 9 inches tall?
  • Does he / she weigh at least 80 pounds?
  • Can your child sit all the way back in the seat and bend his/her knees at the edge of the seat?
  • Does the shoulder belt lay across the chest, NOT the neck?
  • Does the lap belt lay across the upper thighs, NOT the stomach?
Bicycle Helmets

All kids under the age of 16 must wear a helmet when riding a bike. Call MORE HEALTH about purchasing or receiving a free helmet at 813-287-5032.
