President's Message

Steve Thompson, Chapter President 2012-2013

This year’s Annual Region 11 Symposium at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas was the largest turnout to date, with more than 570 attendees from as far away as Connecticut to the East and Hawaii to the West. Each conference, I find that I gravitate to one keynote, that to me, shines above the rest.  The person that stood out to me this year was Bill Walton, former basketball player and remarkable individual. I will not bore you with his on-court attributes, which are many, but I would rather share a bit of who this man has become and what he stands for.

Medi-Cal Planning to Use DRGs in Mid-2013

After some delays the new date for DRG implementation is now July 1, 2013. This new DRG payment methodology will replace the previous payment methods of negotiated rates for contract hospitals.

OIG Study of Reporting Present on Admission Indicators

Previous OIG work found that an estimated 13.5 percent of Medicare beneficiaries hospitalized in October 2008 experienced adverse events, defined as serious harm from medical care resulting in prolonged hospitalization, permanent disability, life-sustaining intervention, or death.  An additional 13.5 percent experienced temporary harm events, defined as requiring intervention but not resulting in lasting harm.

Broken “DSH”es Hit the United States Supreme Court

On June 25, 2012 the Supreme Court granted a writ of certiorari in the case of Sebelius v. Auburn Regional Medical Center on the following issue:  Whether the 180-day statutory time limit for filing an appeal with the Provider Reimbursement Review Board from a final Medicare payment determination made by a fiscal intermediary, 42 U.S.C. 1395oo(a)(3), is subject to equitable tolling?  Behind this dry procedural issue are the seeds of a best selling Medicare drama.
