The Network
Hi there and welcome to the first edition of The Network, the monthly newsletter for UHI Students. This is not only the first email this year but also the first since UHI was officially granted University title this week - fantastic news for students and staff alike!
This email was sent to you, a student at UHI - if these details are incorrect, please update them.
It's official - UHI is a university!
This week marked a momentous point in the history of UHI when it graduated into the University of the Highlands and Islands. The achievement of university title by UHI is the realisation of a long-time ambition for the region to have its own university to support economic development and to help sustain rural and island communities. Importantly for our students is the fact that from now on they will finally be graduates of University of the Highlands and Islands.
The UHI golf team, made up of students studying on the BA Honours Golf Management degree at North Highland College UHI in Dornoch, is currently top of the Scottish University Sports/ BUCS winter league.
A team of research students from the Scottish Association for Marine Science UHI has won a national business start-up competition with a proposal to safeguard the endangered European eel.
Community supplied woodfuel, a packed lunch delivery service for school children, and a Highland cupcake venture, were among the winning entries Inverness College UHI Business Ideas competition.
If you're studying a degree in a history subject you can now progress to Masters level at UHI with our new MLitt History of the Highlands and Islands. You will study Highlands and Islands history from the medieval period to the twentieth century, covering topics such as clearance, war, emigration and famine.
UHI's new dyslexia sticker scheme has just been put in place to ensure that students' work is assessed fairly, neither penalising nor compensating for dyslexic attributes. Dr Iain Morrison, Head of Lifelong Learning believes that “This recognition of dyslexia in assessed work is common practice elsewhere and will be grounded in a careful diagnosis of dyslexia and a sensitive, but fair process.”
Further information is available online or by emailing Mark Ross, UHI disability support co-ordinator.

Name: Mary Bavin Course: Scottish History, part-time & Career Intern Location: The Oa, Islay
About me: I divide my time between studying, work as a home carer, fundraising for the RNLI, teaching and student support; not to mention house building, selling my needlework and working as the Career Centre Intern! I also spent 2 years in the Bruichladdich Distillery, working of course.
My UHI: UHI has allowed me to catch up on the Scottish History I learned from my parents but which was ignored in English schooling. Studying part-time has really helped me get to to know people.
My time: Sailing my small dinghy, horse riding, lace making and cooking period food under contemporary conditions.
My dreams: To run sixteenth century ‘historical banquets’.
