President Trump signs appropriations bill, declares national emergency
WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump signed the omnibus spending package for fiscal 2019 into law that will extend funding to federal agencies and programs for the next seven months. Earlier this week, the House cleared the $333 billion spending package that applies to seven appropriations bills covering Homeland Security, Agriculture, Commerce-Justice-Science, Interior-Environment, Financial Services, State-Foreign Operations, and Transportation-HUD. The bill calls for $7.4 billion or 2.3 percent in overall discretionary spending over fiscal 2018.
In addition to signing the joint resolution, President Trump declared a national emergency at the southern border for his unfunded wall during a White House Rose Garden news conference today. The president said he would move unspent funds from the U.S Departments of Defense and Homeland Security for his border wall.
The Democrats and state governments will likely sue the federal government to prevent President Trump from spending unauthorized funds for his border wall.
