When to Talk with a Career Counselor?

Undergraduate students AND graduate students - this post is for you!

Are you thinking you should meet with one of the career counselors here at CareerLAB but you’re hesitating because you’re not exactly sure what to ask? This is actually a common concern for many students in college, especially at Brown. Often students believe that they need to have an organized presentation of their concerns with perfectly worded questions before they schedule a meeting. Not true! Here’s what you need to know.

Meeting with one of us is a very smart move because the more people you have in your corner - advocating for you, helping you, listening to you - the easier this whole “career” thing will be. The next time you are considering scheduling a time with one us, just do it! If you do have a list of questions, and they are ordered and organized, that’s great, we’ll be happy to help. But for those who don't, we’re happy to help you as well. Just schedule a time, come in, and have a seat; we'll take it from there. Hope to see you soon!

Brown Alums Offer to Talk It Out! on New Podcast

Eve Grassfield: "Can you recall a moment at Brown where you felt confused about your life path?"

Flo Schalliol: "Most seconds I was awake."

Thus begins CareerLAB's new podcast, "Talk it Out!," which launched last month. Through this new resource, Brown undergraduate alumnae/i reflect back on their job-hunting experiences and share the fears and pressures they felt at the time.

Listen to our first podcast here!

If what they talk about sounds familiar to you, we want to hear from you. Share your questions and worries and Brown alumnae/i and our CareerLAB staff will respond to your questions in future podcasts scheduled for later this spring.

Submit questions about your internship/job/career search for upcoming podcasts!

How to Connect Careers and Concentrations

When choosing a concentration, students often ask about the connection between a concentration and a career. Brown’s open curriculum provides students the freedom to explore a range of academic disciplines based on their own interests and goals and to direct the course of their education. This can feel both exciting and overwhelming!

Sometimes academic interests directly correlate to a particular career field and the academic knowledge gained from courses is needed to pursue particular jobs. But most often, the knowledge and skills gained from a concentration is applicable to a wide range of careers.

CareerLAB's career counselors can help you draw the link between what you're studying and what you want to do in your future.
