This extraordinary film is Brazilian director Fellipe Barbosa's second feature (the first was the critically acclaimed Casa Grande), and premiered in the Critics' Week in Cannes, where it won the Visionary Prize. Gabriel Buchmann was a schoolmate of Barbosa’s and the story follows the last 70 days of his life, as he travels through Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Malawi, before his death on the slopes of Malawi’s Mount Mulange in 2009. Gabriel is a young Brazilian in a hurry to see the world before he begins his PhD at UCLA. Though he carries a travel guide, he aggressively resists any notion that he's a tourist and tries to immerse himself in the local cultures of Africa. Gabriel’s appetite for the freedom and friendship of the road gives this film irresistible exuberance and heart. There’s mystery too: he’s so impatient to knock off the achievements he’s set himself, it’s as if he knows his time is limited. It’s that very impatience – a refusal to observe the basic rules of mountain safety – which brings his brief and brilliant life to an end and sets this wonderfully enlivening film in motion. SATURDAY, MAY 19 2.30pm. TAKE EVERY WAVE – THE LIFE OF LAIRD HAMILTON This is the remarkable story of an American icon who changed the sport of big wave surfing forever. Transcending the surf genre, this in-depth portrait of a hard-charging athlete explores the fear, courage and ambition that push a man to greatness--and the cost that comes with it. Laird Hamilton uses a jet ski to provide access to waves too big and too powerful to paddle out to, and hooks on to waves 70, 80, 100 feet high. The footage of him in the water is awe-inspiring, but it’s the portrait of the man that makes the film unforgettable. SUNDAY, MAY 20 10.15am. DON’T LOOK DOWN Don't Look Down tells the story of Richard Branson's creation of the world's largest hot air balloon and his record breaking cross-ocean voyages designed to help publicize the launch and growth of Virgin Air. The film uses previously unseen footage and interviews with all the major players to not only tell the inside story of Branson's trans-oceanic balloon flights ... but also to provide a unique look at the man himself - his upbringing, his wife's influence on his confidence and success and his willingness to embrace risk. SUNDAY, MAY 20 12.00pm. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY RUBY ROSE! After three sell out anniversary screenings in Hobart last week, it’s Launceston’s turn to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Tasmanian classic, The Tale of Ruby Rose.
