Music for the Mind Raises Over $2,400 for Music Programming
Thanks to the work and enthusiasm of the Department’s Music Committee, our second annual Music for the Mind Fundraiser took place on November 14 at the Lovin' Cup, and was a great success. The event featured over 14 musical artists working in multiple areas of Psychiatry including the following:

  • Matthew Maley (Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness)
  • Kasey Howard (Strong Ties Services)
  • Scott Hall with Bolan Marshall-Hallmark (1-9200)
  • Rob Calhoun and Chris Karlic (Older Adults Services)
  • Darcy Collins (Adult Ambulatory Clinic)
  • Cara Borrero (4-9000)
  • Antonio Bottos of Comprehensive Psychiatry Emergency Program (CPEP)
  • Michael Christie (UCC/CPEP) with Jake Everett (Psych Facilities)
  • Joshua Wortzel, MD, Milin Balsara, DO, Annalyn Gibson with Jeu-Hee Hahn (Psychiatry Residency Program) and 
  • Gordon Munding (Retired from Nursing Practice)

Over $2,700 was raised to support mental health through music programming for patients and employees alike. READ MORE>>>​

Lazos Fuertes Marks 20 Years
November marks the 20th anniversary of the launch of Lazos Fuertes. Established with a goal of ensuring access to mental health care for the Rochester Hispanic Community through a culturally competent approach, Lazos Fuertes has served thousands of Hispanic individuals in Monroe and surrounding counties since its opening in 1999. The program moved to its current location at the University of Rochester Medical Center in 2008 from its original location at Ibero-American Action League’s former headquarters on E. Main St. A dessert reception celebrating the program's 20th anniversary will take place on December 4th from 1:00 P.M.– 2:00 P.M. in the Romano Room (1.9041).

Susan McDaniel Featured in Precipice Journal
Susan McDaniel, PhD, Dr. Laurie Sands Distinguished Prof. of Families & Health in Psychiatry and Family Medicine, was recently featured in Precipice, a periodical published by the University of Colorado Department of Family Medicine. The issue, “Our Views, Our Voices," features the reflections of 11 exceptional women in family medicine. READ MORE>>

Bank of America Grant to Support Pediatric Mental Health and Wellness
Bank of America recently announced that it will be awarding a $250,000 grant towards the construction of the new Pediatric Behavioral Health & Wellness building. The new building will provide space for outpatient and partial hospitalization services and will include a library, as well as art and music therapy programs. READ MORE>>>

Hochang “Benjamin” Lee, MD presented the Don Lipsitt Award Lecture alongside Mark Oldham, MD, Aspen Ainsworth, MD, and Jennifer Richman, MD at the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry's 2019 Consultation-Liaison Annual Meeting. They discussed the current state and future of the Proactive C-L Model and its implementation in Rochester. READ MORE>>>

Benjamin Chapman Featured in The New York Times
The New York Times featured a recent study published in JAMA Psychiatry by Benjamin Chapman, PhD, MPH on personality traits in adolescence and how they connect to diagnoses of dementia in later life. READ MORE>>>

Hochang Lee Presents Judd Marmor, MD Memorial Lecture 

Hochang “Benjamin” Lee, MD, John Romano Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry, presented the Judd Marmor, MD Memorial Lecture at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Lee discussed the impact of proactive psychiatric consultation on the length of hospital stays and staff satisfaction. This lectureship was established to broaden the awareness of psychological disorders that impact families in our community and to bring an added sense of understanding and compassion for their care.

Leadership Updates at Employer Based Services
As of September 1st, Ann Cornell, PsyD has been promoted to the role of Director of Employer Based Services (EBS). In her new role, Dr. Cornell will oversee the overall operations of the Employee Assistance Program, Behavioral Health Partners as well as the contracts supporting employers in the Rochester region. In addition, Lacy Morgan-DeVelder, MS, LMFT has joined the leadership team as Assistant Director for Employer Based Services. In this role, Lacy will oversee educational efforts as well as customer service and outreach for EBS contracts while providing clinical care to clients.

Telepsychiatry Presents at OMH Chief Nursing Officer's Conference

Linda Williams and Lara Press Ellingham, MPA, OTR/L spoke at the 2019 New York State Office of Mental Health Chief Nursing Officer's Annual Educational Conference which is comprised of nurses, psychiatric nurses, advanced practice nurses, and mental health professionals in the private and public sectors. They presented about the successes of our telepsychiatry program for nursing homes. 

Supporting Local Meal Programs at the East Ave Grocery Run

Several Psychiatry members, including Kimberly van Orden, Ph.D. and Natalie Mai-Dixon participated in the East Ave Grocery Run in support of local food pantries and emergency meal programs.

 

October Psychiatry Publications

  • Eric Caine, M.D. published a commentary in Epidemiology and Psychiatric Services on building the foundation for comprehensive suicide prevention.
  • Marc Swogger, Ph.D. co-authored a study on the relationship between kratom initiation, regular consumption of illicit drugs and HIV risk behaviors.
  • Mark Oldham, M.D., Hochang Ben Lee, M.D., and Khushminder Chahal, M.D. published an article about proactive consultation-liason psychiatry in Psychiatric Times.
