Highlight: Career Exploration Panel: Careers in Higher Education Administration for PhD Scientists

Do you love working at a university, but aren't sure a faculty career is in your future? Or, are you hoping to land a faculty position and also get involved with shaping programs and policies? The Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is hosting a panel discussion featuring PhDs who are currently working in different capacities as administrators (some hold faculty roles as well) at universities across the Northeast. Come hear about how they came to hold their positions and what you can expect if you go into this field. Our panelists are:

  • James Gould, PhD (Biochemistry & Molecular Biology)
Director, Office for Postdoctoral Fellows, Harvard Medical School
  • Chelsea (Epler) Barbercheck, PhD (Microbiology and Molecular Genetics)
Program Director, BEST Program, Graduate Medical Sciences at Boston University School of Medicine
  • Amy Shapiro, PhD (Cognitive Science, from Brown)
Associate Dean, College of Arts & Sciences and Professor of Psychology, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
  • John Lopes, PhD (Biology)
Associate Dean, College of Natural Sciences and Professor of Microbiology, University of Massachusetts

ASBMB Science Policy Fellowship - Application Open
ASBMB's science policy fellowship offers recently graduated PhDs exposure to a range of activities regarding science policy and congressional and government relations. Fellows work in the public affairs office of ASBMB’s headquarters, located just outside of Washington D.C. and serve for 12-18 months. Applications for the 2016-2017 fellowship are now open; please visit the program's website for details.

NCI Graduate Student Recruiting Program
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is actively seeking advanced PhD students to participate in this program, being held June 22-24 at the NIH's Bethesda, MD campus. The purpose of this program is to invite qualified individuals to get acquainted with the science and resources at the NCI and interview with its Principal Investigators seeking to recruit outstanding young scientists to postdoctoral positions. Support for travel costs is available. For more information and to apply before the April 4 deadline, please visit the event's website.

Become a Judge at the RI State Science and Engineering Fair!
The Rhode Island Science and Engineering Fair is looking for judges for its statewide competition being held on Saturday, April 2, 2016. Participation in the science fair should be a memorable and positive experience for these students in grades 6-12 that will hopefully influence them to study science further and perhaps continue to a career in this field; in order to provide such a positive and enriching experience for the participants, a large number of judges who are themselves enthusiastic and knowledgeable about science is needed. For more information, please visit the event's website.

FluWeb - Report Flu-Like Illness & Missed Classes
Although flu season is winding down, Brown encourages students who are ill with influenza-like illness (ILI) to report their missed class time and needs for assistance through this website. It also helps monitor the spread of the illness across campus. Please visit the FluWeb website for more details.

2016 Student Research Showcase from Sigma Xi
The Student Research Showcase is an online science communication competition for high school, undergraduate, and graduate student participants to create a presentation website that includes a personal video, research abstract, and technical slide presentation. The deadline to participate is Monday, April 4, and judging will take place on April 11-18, 2016. For more information, please visit the event's website.

Career Tip Central

What: BioSciEdNet
Who Runs It: The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
What It Offers: BioSciEdNet (BEN) is a digital library portal for teaching and learning in the biological sciences. The BEN Portal provides access to education resources that are all available free of charge.
Why It's Worth Checking Out: Over 19,290 reviewed resources covering 77 biological sciences topics are available; BEN resources can help you engage student interest, shorten lesson preparation time, provide concept updates, and develop curricula that are in line with national standards for content, use of animals and humans, and student safety; registration is optional and free!

Postdoc Opportunity

Postdoctoral Scholar - The Aroian Laboratory - University of Massachusetts Worcester

An exciting new research position is available to study in depth the molecular mechanism of action of new anti-worm (anthelmintic) compounds being developed by industry. There is an urgent need for new classes of anthelmintics to control nematode parasites of animals and plants. This research position entails applying genetic, molecular, genomic, and/or biochemical techniques with the free-living laboratory nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to discover and elucidate the pathways by which a novel class of anthelmintics functions.

PhD required. Prior experience with C. elegans and/or C. elegans genetic screens is strongly preferred but not essential. To apply, please email CV, cover letter and contact information for three references to christine.holbrook@umassmed.edu.
