Click here November 19, 2019Answers to Last Minute Registration Questions, i.e., "What happens if my advisee doesn't register by the deadline?"Q: What do I need to do as an adviser to approve a student's registration (a.k.a. program) by the end of this week? A: Nothing. You only needed to grant the student "permission to register" prior to your advisees’ online registration times. There is nothing more to do until January, when you will click the Review Complete button after reviewing each advisees’ finalized schedule. Q: What are the little thumbs-up, thumbs-down icons on the left side of the Student's Plan page? A: While cute, these have no functionality currently. You can ignore them. We hope to explore this functionality in future versions of Student Planning. Q: My advisee wants to take a graduate level class. How do they register for it? A: If the class is not listed as “open to Barnard” in the CU Directory of Classes, the student should send the instructor’s and your approval to the registrar’s office at registrar@barnard.edu. The student will need to be manually registered for the class. Info on registering for other types of “special” courses can be found on the registrar’s webpage. Look for the section on “courses requiring special procedures.” Q: What happens if one of my advisees doesn't register for classes by this Friday at 9:30PM? A: Students should plan to register during the next online registration window, beginning Monday, Dec. 9. You will still need to have met with them and granted "permission to register." Students will be able to find their registration times in the usual locations on myBarnard and Student Planning. We recommend that students register now for at least some classes in order to have the best course selection. If students don't register this week or the week of December 9th, they will have to wait until the next registration period opens on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Q: Is there anything special that seniors should be doing now, in preparation for their final semester? A: If you are advising seniors, it would be very helpful to remind them of these things - -If any General Education Requirements (GERs) are not filled in on their online degree audit, seniors should plan to fulfill them this spring. If they believe there is an error in their GER audit, they should get in touch with the Registrar’s Office by completing this form. The senior blog has more info on this topic. -Students need to apply to graduate no later than Dec 1 in order to be reviewed for May graduation. The application form can be found in myBarnard, under the student’s WebAdvisor menu. -Seniors who plan to declare a minor may submit the minor declaration form as soon as they have registered for -- or completed -- all of the classes needed to satisfy the minor. The deadline for seniors to declare a minor is March 1. Seniors may not change their major in their final semester. Here’s additional information about these programs: The 4+1 BA/Master's Pathways combines the undergraduate liberal arts education experience with a master's degree at Columbia University. Beyond Barnard supports students as they explore the pathways through organized overview sessions and application development and review (resume and personal statement review). The Faculty Leads provide guidance with course planning and assisting students with letters of recommendation and general mentorship. Once students are admitted into the 4+1 Pathway, Beyond Barnard supports the pathway specific cohorts throughout their matriculation. Students with an interest in the 4+1 BA/Master's Pathways should attend a general overview session to explore the eligibility requirements, application process, and meet the Faculty Leads.
