Four years after the January 12, 2010 earthquake, many people in the village of Sous Savanne (near the eipicenter) still live in appalling conditions.  Since the massive quake destroyed 90% of residences -- shacks made of sticks, wood, plastic tarps and rusty roofing sheets are now home to many. “When it rains, all the children get wet and sick” is what we hear all the time.
Hope Force International (HFI) is looking for sponsors to build at least 20 more homes in 2014.  The cost for permanent houses is surprisingly low:  one “ti-kay” house costs $ 5,300; a latrine is just $1,100.

More than four years after the earthquake, 34 children -- many of them made orphans by the quake -- still live in a large tent, enduring deplorable living conditions near our HFI adopted village. While being cared for by loving staff, the children of the “tent orphanage” are in desperate need of adequate, long-term housing. Multiple team members have caught the vision after visiting the children, and a groundswell of hope has begun!

With land available in nearby Babay, we hope to build a structure with the look and feel of our Houses of Hope. The cost is approximately $45,000.

Hope Force International will remain in Haiti for the long haul, serving survivors of the 2010 earthquake and those suffering from crushing poverty. The decision to remain has birthed a desire to put down roots near the rural communities with whom we are working -- within easy walking distance.

Plans have been developed to build a 32’ x 28’ two-bedroom home very close to Sous Savanne at a total cost of $42,000. The location increases our ability to have an even greater impact on the surrounding communities and greatly enhances the quality of life of our country coordinators.
