FAMILIA'S NEWSLETTER | 20.6.2018
An eventful spring is now behind. Summer, for Familia this year, is time to charge batteries, re-organise and plan an exciting autumn full of new opportunities. We want to thank once again all our members and partner organisations who attended Right to family life seminar on 15th of May, when we also had the opportunity to celebrate Familia’s 30th year anniversary. On UN International Day of Families we focused on the challenges intercultural families face in regard to family re-union and residence permit process. Experts from academia, public and NGO sector
brought their valuable insight and our panel Which side of the bed do you sleep? led a rewarding discussion. You can watch the panel (in Finnish) from here. If you were in World Village Festival this May you probably saw us there as well. We not only had our stand in Open Finland -tent but we also hosted another exciting panel discussion at Taiga Stage. On stage were Refugee woman of the year 2016; Rita Kostama, Finnish National boxing champion 2017; Rafael Ekroos and child care professional; Jarkko Linervo sharing how their Finnish-African
families are like. Three stories: Africa within intercultural families – discussion (in Finnish) led by Hassan Maikal can be watched from here and it starts from 6:06min. Do not let our summer opening hours stop you from paying us a visit. Just make sure the person you are looking for is not on holidays the day you decide to come. And when you come by, do not be alarmed from the boxes around - we are moving to new premises at the end of August! Summer opening hours: Mo-Thu 10-15.00. Fridays closed. We wish you a Happy Midsummer!
PARTNER'S PATH: NEWS AND ACTIVITIES FOR THE SUMMER
We at Partner’s Path will be working nearly all through summer. Our job hunting peer support group met for the first time on June 19, and the planning of autumn activities and groups is well on the way. Remember also that our CV and job hunting clinic is open every Monday between 3 and 5 p.m., or by appointment!
We also have new activities to share! ThursdayConnect!, once a month at Familia, is where anyone in an intercultural relationship can get together with others, meet new people, explore interesting discussion topics, and take away concrete skills to support their relationship or their career plans in Finland! Come alone, or with your partner!
On Thursday 28.6. at 6pm, it's time to Explore Language Skills. This session aims at giving you concrete tools on how to work around language issues and miscommunication in your relationship, or any relationship in Finland, all the while giving you advice on how to improve your or your partner’s language skills.

SUOMIAREENA 16.-20.7.2018, PORI
In July we will be in Pori, in Suomi Areena where decision makers of Finland will be! The week is full of discussions on societal matters. All events are free of charge and open to all. You can find us at stand number 54 together with Finland for all Families -network and Simpukka ry. With our partner organisations we will be hosting on Monday 16th of July at 10.00 a discussion on the challenges and opportunities of familylife. Minister of Family Affairs and Social Services; Annika Saarikko, member of the parliament Ozan Yanar and researcher Venla Berg from the Family Federation of Finland will discuss why family as a concept has lost its popularity and how we can support the growth of Finland’s population. The discussion will be streamed.
COME AND JOIN US: WE'RE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS! A significant portion of Familia’s activities rely on volunteer involvement. The Finnish language discussion groups, for example, as well as other language groups for adults, language clubs for children and families, and Duo activities for intercultural families are all primarily led by volunteers. Familia provides volunteers with fun activities and a diverse range of possibilities for involvement.
Welcome to find out more about volunteering in Familia on Thursday 23rd of August at 17.00! The opportunities are manifold. Our info session, where we will brief how you can get involved, what you can give and what you can get is open to all. There is no need for registration, just save the date and do stop by. Having a cup of coffee with us is not binding you to any further action. For those who then decide to volunteer we will organise a seperate training later in the Autumn.
As a Familia volunteer, you can facilitate:

INTEGRATION 2018 - ALL ABOUT INTEGRATION18.-19.9.2019 Kulttuuritalo, Helsinki Calling all integration experts and enthusiasts! Want to hear about the latest developments in the field of integration? Does the
asylum seeker reception system work? Are basic services fit for purpose? What about housing? Or education and employment – how are they faring? Is inclusion working out? Is there cause for concern?
Why not come and consider these, and many other key issues concerning integration, in Helsinki's Kulttuuritalo building in September?
Integration is about partnership, asking questions, making mistakes and gaining experiences. It's also about learning, insights and success.
Welcome to sharing all these issues with us at the ‘Integration 2018 – All about integration’ event where, together, we will give thought to what lies ahead. You will find a complete list of integration ‘superheroes’ here.
Registration for the event has begun on 14.6.2018.
