Spring 2011 has arrived

I chose the Town of Marfa because it was the best-looking town and most practical...During this time [1972], I rented the east building on the city block. Within the city block, there was a smaller two-story building, with two children's rooms and the necessary domesticity. On the other side of the building, in line with my daughter's room, is an alley of green grass and seven plum trees with purple leaves. She wanted a yard.

Donald Judd Exhibition

Judd exhibition to open at David Zwirner Gallery, New York

David Zwirner Gallery will present an exhibition of works by Donald Judd drawn from Judd's seminal 1989 exhibition held at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany.  This will be the first time these particular works have been exhibited together in a group of this size since the 1989 installation.  The exhibition will span both of the spaces at 525 and 533 West 19th Street, and this will be the gallery’s inaugural exhibition of Judd's work.  For more information on the exhibition, please visit:

101 Spring Street Restoration

The casting has begun

This month, Judd Foundation's project team visited the Robinson Iron foundry in Alexander City, Alabama, where restoration is underway on parts of 101 Spring Street's cast iron facade.

1,300 pieces are being removed to be cleaned and repaired, and in some cases used to make unique sand molds to replicate missing pieces. Large pieces of cast iron and ornamentation are coated in a zinc alloy primer and returned to the building for reassembly.

Gatherings

Judd Foundation held its first gathering of 2011 at the home of Frederick and Michele Oka Doner. Surrounded by their collection and Michele's artwork, guests discussed Judd’s writings and the act of "drawing," as a starting point for debate on artists' practices and art making.

Soiree
To kick off an eventful week of art in March, including the Armory Art and ADAA Fairs, Judd Foundation hosted a small event at the loft of artist Mary Obering, a long-time friend and colleague of Donald Judd.  Guests enjoyed the elegant installation of Mary's paintings in her studio and celebrated artist's loft-living of the 1960's and 1970's.

Artists and Legacy: A Symposium

On April 11th, Judd Foundation hosted a one day symposium for artists and arts professionals at The Noguchi Museum, in partnership with the Museum and The Philip Johnson Glass House. With funding provided in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, the three organizations hosted two panel discussions featuring their directors as well as artists Yvonne Jacquette, Joan Jonas, Joel Shapiro, and Fred Wilson. Concluding remarks were provided by artist Liam Gillick.

Bad is Good: A conversation at Parsons,

The New School for Design, New York
On April 21st, Judd Foundation hosted a lecture at Parsons featuring Flavin Judd and Rama Chorpash, designer and Director of Product Design for the School of Constructed Environments at Parsons.  Flavin Judd's essay, Bad is Good, set the context for a discussion on Donald Judd's process and principles of design.

This event is part of The Donald Judd Architecture + Design Lecture Series, which is supported in part, by funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
