Specialization Area DesignationThrough the Specialization Area Designation, active CTRSs are offered the opportunity to be recognized for focused continuing education and experience in a specialized area of practice. Recreational therapy professionals who acquire a higher level of education, knowledge and advanced skills in specific areas of specialization stand out among their peers. The Specialization Area Designation is not a separate certification, but is a direct extension of the CTRS credential; therefore the application may only be submitted at the time of recertification. NCTRC awards recognition in the following seven areas of specialization:Adaptive Sports and RecreationBehavioral HealthCommunity Inclusion ServicesDevelopmental DisabilitiesGeriatricsPediatricsPhysical Medicine/Rehabilitation

The summer months often serve as an opportunity for students to complete their academic internships. In order to provide a smooth transition to obtaining the

- The intern must work a minimum of 20 hours per week and no more than 45 hours per week.
- The primary agency CTRS supervisor must be employed at least 30 hours a week at the sponsoring agency. At least 50% of the supervisor's duties must be in therapeutic recreation and they must be an active CTRS on the first day of the student’s internship.
- The internship must be
supervised by an academic supervisor and an agency supervisor both of whom need to hold active CTRS status.
- The internship agency supervisor must be certified for at least one year prior to supervising interns.
- The internship experience must be based on the therapeutic recreation process as defined by the current NCTRC Job Analysis.
