OKCMOA Tees Up for the First-Ever Exhibition Devoted to the Game of Golf

This summer, perfecting your swing on the golf course can be followed by a cool visit to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art's galleries to explore the history of the sport through art. See the royal and ancient game as depicted by landscape and portrait artists, photographers, and pop artists through the ages.

Organized by the High Museum of Art and the National Galleries of Scotland, The Art of Golf is the first-ever exhibition devoted to the game by a major American art museum. Comprising approximately 90 works from artists as diverse as Rembrandt, Charles Lees, Norman Rockwell, and Andy Warhol,

The Art of Golf will examine the game's origins, its foundation in Scotland, and its growth in America in the twentieth century. The exhibition also will include an introductory video that features golf legends Sir Michael Bonallack and Jack Nicklaus.

The Art of Golf will be on view through October 7. For more information about the exhibit, visit the Oklahoma City Museum of Art website.

Dwelling Spaces owner to open shop in Womb Gallery building

by Brianna Bailey (The Journal Record):

Tulsa’s trendy Dwelling Spaces boutique plans to open an Oklahoma City store next to Flaming Lips’ frontman Wayne Coyne’s Womb Gallery on NW Ninth Street.

Dwelling Spaces owner Mary Beth Babcock said she had been thinking of opening a store in Oklahoma City for a while when Coyne urged her to consider space at the neon-painted Womb Gallery building as an option.

“Owning a business, you’re always thinking about what your next step will be, and this is something I’ve been dreaming of doing for a while,” Babcock said.

Babcock opened the original 1,500-square-foot Dwelling Spaces store six years ago in Tulsa’s Blue Dome District. The boutique sells fashionable Oklahoma-themed items ranging from Bob Wills T-shirts to Flaming Lips-branded hot sauce.
Babcock was named Oklahoma Today magazine’s 2011 Oklahoman of the Year in December for her efforts to revitalize the Blue Dome District and championing Oklahoma art and culture.

The Oklahoma City Dwelling Spaces shop will be small, about 400 square feet inside the Womb Gallery’s converted warehouse building at 25 NW Ninth Street, Babcock said.
“We celebrate Tulsa, but for me it’s about the whole state, so this little extension into Oklahoma City just made sense,” Babcock said.

Automobile Alley developer Steve Mason, who owns the Womb Gallery building, as well as much of the surrounding real estate, said he has enjoyed seeing the block come back to life over the past few years with several trendy shops and restaurants including Sara Sara Cupcakes and S&B Burger.
“Mary Beth’s energy and creativity will further help Automobile Alley to grow and prosper and be fun,” he said.

Coyne’s Womb Gallery opened in spring 2011, but has been closed since the Oklahoma City Fire Department declared the building wasn’t up to code before a Flaming Lips party scheduled for New Year’s Eve. Mason has been working to get the building up to code by installing fire sprinklers and resolving other issues at the building, he said.

He said he expects the building to be ready to reopen the public sometime this fall.
