In this issue – seeking industry input on glyphosate, the latest on the methyl bromide reassessment, and 1080 post-operation reports are due.

Industry input sought on glyphosate

The EPA is looking for feedback from professional users of glyphosate, as part of its call for information to determine how much of the substance is being imported, manufactured, and used in New Zealand.

If you’re a contractor, commercial grower, council or industry representative, please complete the online form linked below. Importers, manufacturers, and distributors of glyphosate are also encouraged to contribute.

Non-professional users are welcome to continue providing their responses too.

Submissions are open until 5.00pm on 27 August 2021.

Methyl bromide

Following a new application by the timber industry group Stakeholders In Methyl Bromide Reduction (STIMBR), additional time has been added to the recapture deadline for the fumigant methyl bromide.

1080 post-op reports due

All post-operation reports for aerial 1080 operations undertaken in 2020 are due by the end of June 2021, as part of the annual reporting cycle.

Any operators yet to provide their 2020 post-operation report to the EPA should email hscompliance@epa.govt.nz

Reminder: Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) permits

Permits to import new bulk HFCs must be made in advance of the year of import, so if you want to import in 2022 you must have your permit issued this year.

Applications for special permits to import new bulk HFCs for 2022 close on 1 July 2021, and on 1 September 2021 for “grandparented” permits. No late applications are able to be accepted.

Export permits, exporter’s import permits, import permits for recycled HFCs, and exemptions for transhipments, may be applied for in the year the import or export is occurring.

APP204220 by Zero Invasive Predators Ltd (ZIP) to import or manufacture dead rodent laced with the vertebrate toxic agent sodium fluoroacetate in containment.
Decision: approved with controls 21 May 2021

APP203995 by Grosafe Chemicals Limited to import or manufacture suspension concentrate containing 15 g/L spirotetramat for release.
Decision: approved with controls 25 May 2021

APP204207 by Corteva AgriScience New Zealand Limited (formally known as DOW AgriSciences) to import or manufacture Experimental Pesticides - Development Trials 3 in containment.
Decision: approved with controls 26 May 2021

No hazardous substance applications, previously notified, were withdrawn in this period.

Amendments to approvals

No amendments were made under section 67A of the HSNO Act for minor or technical errors, decided by the EPA or the Chief Executive under delegated powers from the EPA during this period.
