Registration and abstract submission is now open for the 2014 AFAO National Gay Men's HIV Health Promotion Conference “Integrating Action, Promoting Partnership”.

The conference will be held in Manly in northern Sydney on the 8 & 9 April 2014. It is aimed at people who work in HIV health promotion and policy, with a particular focus on gay men and people living with HIV. We also welcome the participation of people working with issues of gay men's sexual health and well-being more broadly, as well as those working in HIV organisations with diverse client groups.

The conference is an opportunity for HIV health promoters, policy makers, and researchers to network, highlight best-practice, and discuss practical and strategic health promotion responses to emerging issues in the HIV epidemic in Australia.

The conference theme refers to the importance of maintaining an integrated community-based health promotion approach in the context of combination approaches to HIV prevention, many of which emphasise medical technologies.

It also refers to the challenge of ensuring that HIV health promotion delivered to gay men and people with HIV is integrated and complementary.

'Promoting partnerships' refers to the increasing need to work across a variety of contexts alongside a range of partners who have different values or objectives, and within changing political and funding landscapes that impact on the practice and goals of community-based health promotion.

The conference will be preceded by a themed networking afternoon offering an opportunity to share experiences and insights with colleagues and peers working on similar issues and a ‘newbies’ dinner for workers and volunteers who have joined he HIV sector in the past two years.

The day following the conference two skills building workshops will be available.

AFAO is offering a limited number of scholarships for volunteer health promoters to attend the 2014 National Gay Men's HIV Health Promotion Conference.
