1. Geoff Vogt's summary In the run up to Christmas and while Victorians celebrate the lifting of restrictions many ILF Scholars are tasting significant success, about which you can read in our "Scholars in the News" section. The biggest ever ILF Scholar function ever held occurred on 13 October. There are plenty of photos and facts about the tour of the amazing Detmold surgical face mask facility. We have some great events coming soon including another factory tour and Christmas function on 7 December. There are two more places for the Mitsubishi Drive
Day. A very relevant thought from Andrew Kay, is one of the best I have seen this year. The "Promote your product section" is chockers with special offers for Scholars and there is some information about other businesses.
2. New Quiz Competition With the Superloop 500 and the Tour Down Under cancelled, will any more big ticket events be cancelled. If so name one. First correct answer received by COB Friday 6th November will win a bottle of wine.
Send your answer to suzi@industryleaders.com.au
The winner will be announced in the February Bulletin. The winner to October's quiz, will be announce in December's bulletin.
The question was: Will Donald Trump be forced to withdraw from the race? If he does “go all the way” will he win? The winner to September's quiz, will be announced in February's bulletin.
The question was: Will the 2021 Grand Prix be confirmed to be held at the Bend by 31 January 2021?
Monday 9 November, 9.30am to 3.30pm
Mitsubishi Motors 4 WD Experience Day
Two more spots available - First come, first served. Drive to Goolwa Surf Club with driver changes on the way so you can experience different vehicles. Take turns to drive the vehicles in testing sand undulations and along the beach at Goolwa for two hours. Return to Angoves at McLaren Vale for lunch at 1.30 pm. Those who attended the Audi drive day in 2019 will recall how good the Angove’s lunch was. Arrive at Mitsubishi Tonsley by 3.30 pm. This is a drive day with a difference. It offers real adventure and will teach many of us new lessons. Geoff Vogt believes these vehicles are quiet achievers. They are great family cars, and excellent workhorses for trailers, boats and outback adventures. The famous camera wholesaler, John Mack, used to drive throughout outback SA and WA, including roads such as the Gunbarrel Highway to deliver stock and display new equipment to retailers and photographers living in isolated parts. John drove Land Cruisers for many years on these trips, but found they were not as bullet proof as legend would have it. John, who is a personal friend of Geoff, says he decided to try a Pajero about 15 years ago and found it to be not only unbreakable but far more comfortable and functional. He does much less outback driving these days but sticks to Pajero as his vehicle of choice. This event
has been made possible with the support of Shaun Westcott (ILF 2018), President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Australia.
ILFSN Christmas Breakup Party - Monday 7 December 2020 at 5.30pm At Axiom Precision Manufacturing
13-19 Johansson Road, Wingfield, South Australia 5013 Includes a tour of the Axiom Plant commencing at 5.40 pm. Axiom is a true SA home grown success story. A little over ten years ago Axiom was almost entirely devoted to producing parts for the Automotive industry. MD. Jim Grose, foresaw the demise of the Australian auto industry and began moving the business focus to other sectors well before most others. Today it is a diversified precision
engineering and injection moulding business. This success revolves around a strong in-house design capability. Design started many years back with “A” Class Lens Lighting Injection Mould Tooling through now to designing and manufacturing Power Supplies for Defence projects such as Silvershield {In vehicle IED Protection Device}. Axiom product lines include: - vertical tail components for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (sole
supplier to BAE)
- Supply precision machining of Electronic Hardware for TAE Aviation for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.
- Export directly to Boeing Defence USA, Flight Control components for the Chinook Helicopter.
- world class optical telescope components to high precision fuel cell components for the space industry
- Manufacture of Defence IED Protection Devices from the Mango Project through to the Silvershield program.
- assemblies and sub-assemblies for air, land and sea defence projects including for the Australian Collins Class Submarines for which Axiom provides precision machined engine components (including main engine bearing assemblies), electronic hardware, manufacture and maintenance of tooling for battery components through to components rated to Safety of Hull and Safety of Life.
- for the mining industry total engineering solutions range from in-house design, fabrication, CNC machining and equipment refurbishment, through to delivery and full backup support
- electronic sub-assemblies including machining and integration of metals, polymers and graphite etc. with the highest level of detail and quality.
- plates, anchor inserts, hook-in shoulders and custom billet machined track wheels for the rail industry
- medical components including bone plates and nails implant components, dental implant components, eye & laser surgery machine components, specialised surgical equipment, medical testing equipment (hexapod robotic simulator), the tooling and injection
moulding for medical components including sleep apnoea masks, syringe components, DNA sample test plates and components for Micro-X, the mobile X-ray medical and security imaging system.
- aftermarket automotive capabilities including numberplate surrounds to billet machined engine blocks and lens lighting moulds.
A visit to Axiom will provide you the opportunity to end a challenging and tough 2020 on a high note. Numbers are limited so please book early to avoid
disappointment, invites will be sent out shortly via Green Envelope. We look forward to seeing you there. This function is generously sponsored by Grant Thornton.
Media Training with Ron Kandelaars - February 2021 Details will be provided in the December Bulletin. This function is generously sponsored by and held at Grant Thornton.
4. Recap of October's Cocktail Function at Jarmer's Kitchen which included a tour of the Detmold Medical Mask Facility. This event was a sell out with 60 ILF Scholars and members in attendance, at no charge to participants due to generous sponsorship from Ernst Young and the Detmold Group. Alf Ianniello gave a very interesting and informative talk about the development of the Detmold face mask facility. He said it was 14 weeks from concept to full operation and involved fully lining and temperature controlling a former warehouse and importing all the machines by airfreight as well as sourcing
all the production inputs including filter material, elastic straps and mouldable metal strips. All of this had to be laid out to maximise efficiency and coordinated in a logical sequence. This sounded impressive, but it was only when one was in the plant that the enormity of the task was apparent. It was a great evening, the weather was balmy warm for the 10 minute stroll from Jarmers to the factory, there was excellent food and great drinks and of course good company.
5. Interesting thought sent through by Andrew Kay
"IF YOU'RE OVER 45 AND DON'T HAVE AN UNDER-30 MENTOR - NOT MENTEE, MENTOR - THEN YOU'RE GOING TO MISS FUNDAMENTAL SHIFTS IN THINKING THAT ARE HAPPENING."
6. Scholars in Focus - Grant Wilckens
Adelaide isn’t the most obvious choice for headquarters of a top Australian tourism business, but for one of the industry’s quiet giants it’s been the perfect launch pad, with locally-born CEO and founder Grant Wilckens at the helm. Discovery Holiday Parks (now expanded to be the G’DAY Group) was founded during the global financial crisis with just three caravan parks and Grant’s vision for reinvigorating the great Australian holiday. With Grant’s background in mergers and acquisitions, the Group has pursued an aggressive growth strategy, expanding to almost 300 properties and over 1400 staff, making it the largest regional accommodation provider in the country. With a corporate finance background built on
roles with Rothschild and 360 Capital Group, Grant’s career spanned London and Sydney before resettling in Adelaide in 2004. As the G’DAY Group has grown, so too has Grant’s ability to shift the dial, reshaping the image of dated 70s campsites to a new, authentic experience with the customer at its heart. In a landscape traditionally dominated by small family businesses, Discovery and the G’DAY Group are a disruptor, leading the charge in digital technology and data-driven customer insights, as well as investing significantly in park developments and experiential tourism. Grant completed the Stanford Executive Leadership Development Program in 2015 and has said this experience gave him the confidence and additional knowledge to pursue contested takeovers.
