Sumner Food Forest celebrates volunteer birthdaysThe lovely folk at the Sumner Food Forest threw a birthday bash for some of their volunteers last week, which meant lots of cake eating in the spring sunshine. The Sumner Food Forest was one of the first to be developed in Ōtautahi. The forest is located on the grounds of Ko Taku Reo (formerly Van Asch Deaf Education Centre) and was established five years ago with the aim of providing a permaculture system which provides a free and sustainable food source and educates on the diverse food systems available. The aim for the forest is, along with the community garden, to provide a sustainable supply of free and healthy food for those
who need it in the Sumner community. It also provides an educational space through workshops and volunteering where local residents can learn how cultivate their own healthy food at home. The forest also provides a space for people to meet, connect, learn and participate in active recreation leading to enhance well-being individually and as a community of interest.
