He complimented his nose-ring; it was the first time he’s ever liked it on a man. He pinched his butt a little and invited himself to our house to talk about candles. The look on boyfriend’s face was gut wrenching- he was frozen, hypnotised, staring back into this man’s eyes, trying to keep up the level of intensity for as long as he could handle it… he was nearly crying with joy, as was I, and my legs went a little weak from how much I was laughing...

the best of the best: 50 years of music docos

Festival season is approaching and we are all starting to figure out who we love enough to subject ourselves to hours of crowds, port-a-loos and expensive tipples. We start penny pinching so we can be fed and watered on the day and we brace ourselves for the inevitably questionable attendees. Well, below is a solution that won’t send you into debt, will free you from sore feet and you can even wear your tracky dacks. Pop some corn and slip one of the below films into your DVD player because this is a list of the best music doco’s that will take you right back to 1969.

the whodunit sleuth

at limelite theatre, wanneroo

Can you figure out “whodunit”? That’s the challenge Limelight Theatre is giving audiences this September and October with its murder-mystery production Sleuth.

Written by Anthony Shaffer, it won a 1971 Tony Award for best play and was adapted by playwright Harold Pinter for a 2007 film starring Michael Caine and Jude Law, directed by Kenneth Branagh. Caine was also in the original 1972 film with Sir Laurence Olivier.

The play follows mystery writer Andrew Wyke, who lures his wife’s lover Milo Tindall to his manor house where he harbours an obsession for inventions and deceptions of fiction and a fascination with games.

The plot thickens when Wyke puts a proposition to Milo he finds hard to resist and Inspector Doppler, Detective Sergeant Tarrant and PC Higgs become involved in the chain of events.

September 27, 28, 29, October 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13. Tickets are $19 adults, $16 concession and $10 children.

edge of centre

at heathcote museum & gallery, applecross

An exhibition by Anne Duff and Jane King.

To be opened by Shadow Minister for Culture and the Arts John Hyde MLA on Friday, 28 of September 2012 at 6.00 - 8.00pm. To attend the opening please RSVP by Wednesday, 26 September 2012 to claire.bushby@melville.wa.gov.au or phone 9364 5666.

Exhibition runs from Saturday, 29 September to Sunday, 4 November 2012.

Anne Duff and Jane King have explored the past life of a small corner shop on the city fringe. They peered through the keyhole to another time; when the world was bigger and slower, when old social networks were localised, like single, fragile spider webs stretching delicately out toward each other, connecting thinly, at random.

In this technological age it is no longer fantasy to be able to see through walls. New radar technology has been developed that will allow the viewer to peer through solid surfaces in real time with nothing more than a mobile phone.

the warrior and the princess

at the blue room theatre, northbridge

“Even a hunter cannot kill a bird which flies to him for refuge.”

Europe 1939, World War II begins. Jewish refugees flee when Poland falls to Germany. As the war progresses and the Allied forces strike back, the Soviet Union and Germany threaten to invade the refugees’ fragile safe haven in Lithuania. With borders closing, the refugees are desperate; their future looks dire whichever force may invade.

But in times of injustice, help sometimes comes from unexpected sources…

The Warrior and the Princess is a story of courage and the sacrifice of one for the lives of many. A unique reimagining of true events blends performance with shadow play, puppetry, and live piano accompaniment to recreate this little-known story of hope amidst the devastation of World War II.

“…each person must be judged on their character and nothing else.”
