Er is goed en slecht nieuws uit het kamp van Rock Tribune. We beginnen met het minder goede nieuws en dat is voornamelijk naar onze abonnees gericht in België. We krijgen immers al eens mails binnen van abonnees die ons laten weten dat ze het blad ontvangen nadat het al in de winkel te vinden is. Dat klopt! Het zit zo dat Rock Tribune eigenlijk pas de dinsdag als distributiedag geeft, maar het blad vaak al de zaterdag ervoor te verkrijgen is. Helemaal vervelend wordt het als de Post, die jarenlang netjes binnen de 2 à 3 werkdagen leverde, er sinds enkele maanden 4 à 5 werkdagen over doet. Het maakt in de meest extreme gevallen al vlug een verschil van 5 dagen vroeger, al zeker met het weekend ertussen. We hebben er met de Post over gepraat en een snellere levering zou kunnen, mits we een niet geringe meerkost betalen. Voorlopig zien we daar vanaf teneinde te voorkomen dat de prijs van een abonnement gaat stijgen. We waarderen het enorm dat de lezers gebrand zitten op het ontvangen van hun exemplaar, maar we vragen begrip voor de afwijkende levertijden. Ondertussen bekijken we wat we kunnen doen om het probleem op te lossen.
Hoe dan ook zou iedereen vandaag (ten laatste) de editie van februari in de bus moeten hebben ontvangen en sinds gisteren ligt het blad ook te koop aangeboden in alle verdeelpunten. We hebben eens temeer alles uit de kast gehaald om de stroom aan platen en interviews te bundelen tot 100 bladzijden ‘hard’ leesvoer!
Goed nieuws is er in de vorm van een stijging in verkoop. Rock Tribune blijft in dat opzicht al jaren status quo, maar maakte vorig jaar wel een stijging mee van 5% ten opzichte van 2011.  Geen fenomenale groei, maar gezien de steile neerwaartse tendens in de magazine-sector toch wel iets waar we trots op kunnen zijn.  Bovendien blijft ook het aantal abonnementen toenemen.
We blijven er met andere woorden een spreekwoordelijke lap op geven en als je dit leest zijn we alweer volop bezig met de editie van maart.

Nog 184 dagen staan er op de teller van de Alcatraz website. Dat wil zeggen dat we op het kantelpunt aangekomen zijn en alweer kunnen beginnen met aftellen naar de volgende editie. We doen dat niet vooraleer met CHANNEL ZERO en VICIOUS RUMORS eerst nog twee nieuwe namen bekend te maken.  En weet je, er zitten nog enkele leuke namen in onze trommel, maar meer nieuws daaromtrent hoor je binnenkort.

Er zijn zaken in België waar we niet trots op moeten zijn, maar er zijn evengoed zaken waar we graag met de borst vooruit over praten. Dat laatste gaat zeker op voor Channel Zero, de band die in de jaren negentig furore maakte met enkele schitterende albums. En hoewel het gelijknamige debuutalbum nog steeds onze voorkeur wegdraagt (wat een thrashplaat toch!!), is het met ‘Unsafe’ uit 1995 dat de band echt wild om zich heen slaat. Kosten noch moeite worden gespaard en zelfs ene Michael Barbierro (Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Madonna, etc...) wordt erbij gehaald om het album te mixen. Toch is het niet enkel de fenomenale sound die ervoor zorgt dat het album maar liefst 60.000 keer over de toonbank gaat, maar zijn het vooral de songs (met uitschieters ‘Suck My Energy’ en publiekslieveling ‘Help’ voorop) die van ‘Unsafe’ de onbetwiste Belgische metalklassieker maken. De opmars is niet meer te houden en optredens op Torhout/Werchter en Pukkelpop staan inmiddels geboekstaafd als legendarisch. Als de band op een headline toer door Australië trekt, hebben de heren er al verschillende Europese tournees opzitten met Megadeth, Danzig, Pro-Pain, Spudmonsters, Life Of Agony, Napalm Death, Exhorder, M.O.D. en Biohazard. Channel Zero is ondertussen een goed geoliede machine en de internationale doorbraak wenkt. Nadat ‘Black Fuel’ in 1996 verschijnt, trekt de band alweer de baan op, deze keer met Body Count en diens controversiële zanger Ice-T. Een schokgolf raast als een tsunami door het land als de band in 1997 plotsklaps haar afscheid aankondigt. Er volgt nog een live-cd, maar nadien gaat de stekker er definitief uit. De bandleden gaan elk hun eigen weg met vermeldenswaardige projecten als Skitsoy (Franky) en Sons Of Jonathas (Xavier) tot gevolg. In 2009 bereikt ons het bericht dat een reünie in de maak is. Gitarist Xavier Carrion past voor de eer, maar de band verrast wel degelijk vriend en vijand door in het voorjaar van 2010 in een mum van tijd maar liefst zes keer de Brusselse AB uit te verkopen. De Amerikaanse gitarist Mikey Doling is ondertussen de band komen vervoegen als vervanger van Carrion. Het enthousiasme van band én publiek werkt zo aanstekelijk dat met ‘Feed ‘Em With A Brick’ zelfs een nieuw album verschijnt. De plaat haalt goud in eigen land en een uitverkochte toer in het clubcircuit lokt liefst 9.000 fans naar de Belgische concertzalen. We zouden nog meer superlatieven in het bakje kunnen gooien om te omschrijven wat deze band de voorbije twee decennia betekende in het metallandschap, maar we zijn vooral blij dat we de mannen, na jaren aandringen, eindelijk op ons podium hebben staan. Misschien is het niet verkeerd om te spreken van een cirkel die rond is want in 1990 begon het voor Channel Zero allemaal in het Gentse thrashcafé Alcatraz, de beruchte kroeg waarvan we nu nog steeds de naam gebruiken.

Eerlijk is eerlijk, we dragen Vicious Rumors een wel héél warm hart toe. Kan het ook anders met een band die maar liefst vier (!!) klassiekers op haar palmares heeft staan? Want hoe je het ook draait of keert, eind jaren tachtig, begin jaren negentig staat er geen maat op de klasse die deze band uit de Bay Area uitstraalt. Platen als ‘Digital Dictator’, ‘Vicious Rumors’, ‘Welcome To The Ball’ en ‘Word Of Mouth’ koestert menig metalfan vandaag nog steeds als kostbare juwelen. En laat dat nu eens geen vorm van misplaatste nostalgie zijn, maar bikkelharde realiteit. En hoewel we zanger Carl Albert nog steeds graag als referentie nemen voor een van de beste stemmen in de rijke geschiedenis van hardrock en heavy metal, moeten we er eerlijkheidshalve meteen bij vertellen dat het vooral de synergie tussen zijn karakteristieke, maar o zo mooie stem en de krachtige doch melodieuze power metal is die voor legio kippenvelmomenten zorgt. Memorabele songs in overvloed, ze allemaal opnoemen zou ons te ver afleiden. ‘Word Of Mouth’ (1994) verschijnt dan wel wat ongelukkig op een moment dat het genre (althans deze niche) zich in een neerwaartse spiraal beweegt, maar als zanger Carl Albert in 1995 overlijdt ten gevolge van een auto-ongeval, denkt menig doemdenker dat het doek ook over de band zal vallen. Maar dat is zonder gitarist Geoff Thorpe (al sinds 1979 aan het roer) gerekend die een jaar na het overlijden van Albert al met een nieuwe plaat op de proppen komt. Thorpe zingt de nummers op ‘Something Burning’ zelf in (voornamelijk uit eerbetoon aan z’n overleden vriend), maar op ‘Cyberchrist’ uit 1998 is met Brian O’Connor een verdienstelijke nieuwkomer te horen. Niemand die Albert kan en wil vergeten, maar het mag gezegd dat O’Connor het er de daaropvolgende jaren niet slecht van afbrengt bij VR. Ondertussen is het een komen en gaan binnen de groep. Het rijtje muzikanten en zangers die ooit in loondienst waren van Thorpe, ziet er inmiddels indrukwekkend uit. Er is één rode draad en dat is Thorpe zelf. Het strekt de man tot eer dat hij onvermoeibaar muzikanten en zangers blijft zoeken en bovendien blijft toeren. De zalen worden kleiner, de gedrevenheid van de man des te groter. Op ‘Warball’ (2006) en ‘Razorback Killers’ (2011) is het alweer koekenbak. De band keert terug naar de ‘oude’ sound en haalt op beide albums nog eens loeihard uit. Er is sinds enkele jaren zelfs sprake van een vaste bezetting en er valt de jongste tijd zelfs enige rust te bespeuren bij de anders overijverige Thorpe. Wanneer de band twee jaar terug in de buitentent speelt, overvalt ons als organisatie een vorm van schaamte. Want hoewel Vicious Rumors een dijk van een show speelt, overheerst het gevoel dat de band eigenlijk een stek op het hoofdpodium verdient. We beloofden onszelf toen plechtig dat de band een herkansing zou krijgen en het mag dan wel twee jaar geduurd hebben; we garanderen jullie dat Vicious Rumors nu zal staan waar het moet staan! Om met de woorden van Thorpe himself af te sluiten: ‘Hell Yes, VR is doing time at Alcatraz!!!!’ 

Nieuw album: ‘Electric Punishment’ verschijnt op 26 april!

We have some good and some bad news from the Rock Tribune camp. We’ll start with the less good news and that is primarily directed to our subscribers in Belgium. We received mails from subscribers telling us they receive the magazine after it hits the stores. And that’s correct! Rock Tribune should be distributed always on Tuesday but it often leaves the Saturday before. And it becomes totally annoying when the Post, who delivered within 2 or 3 days for years, is taking 4 to 5 days since several months now. In most extreme cases it makes a difference of 5 days and certainly when the weekends are in between. We talked to the Post and offered an extra payment for a faster delivery. But for now it’s not possible in order to avoid the rise of a subscription cost. We really appreciate our readers are keen to receive their copies, however we hope on some understanding about the different delivery times for now. Meanwhile we will try to solve the problem. Anyway, today everyone should have received his or her copy and since yesterday the magazine is also offered at all distribution points. Once again we bundled the flow of records and interviews up to 100 pages to read.
The good news is that we can announce an increase of sales. Rock Tribune has lagged status quo, but last year we made an increase of 5% compared to 2011. Nothing spectacular, but with a downward trend in the magazine sector this is something we can be proud of. Moreover the number of subscriptions increased.
We still continue and while you read this, we are already busy with the March edition.

Yet there are 184 days on the counter of the Alcatraz website. This means we arrived at the turning point and are able to start countdown to the next edition. We would not leave you without announcing CHANNEL ZERO and VICIOUS RUMORS as both bands are 100% confirmed now. And you know, there are still some nice names in our box, but more about that will follow soon.

There are things in Belgium we are not proud of, but there are equally things we can’t stop talking about. One of those things is Channel Zero, a successful band from the nineties who released some fantastic albums. And although we still prefer the eponymous debut cd (what a thrash album!), they are breaking through with ‘Unsafe’ in 1995. No efforts will be saved and even Michael Barbierro (Metallica, Guns ‘n Roses, Madonna, etc…) is brought in to mix the album. Yet it is not only the phenomenal sound that makes the album sold more than 60.000 copies but it is mainly the songs (with outliers ‘Suck My Energy and audience favourite ‘Help’) what makes ‘Unsafe’ an undisputed Belgian metal classic. Channel Zero is on the move with performances at Torhout/Werchter and Pukkelpop which are stated as legendary. When the band travels to Australia for a headline tour, they already toured Europe with Megadeth, Danzig, Pro-Pain, Spudmonsters, Life Of Agony, Napalm Death, Exhorder, M.O.D. and Biohazard. In the meantime Channel Zero has become a well-oiled machine and the international breakthrough beckons.  After ‘Black Fuel’ appears in 1996, they hit the road again and this time with Body Count and his controversial singer Ice-T. When the band suddenly announces their retirement in 1997 a shock wave rages through the country. There is still a live cd coming but then they pulled the plug definitely. The band members went their separate ways with some nice results like Skitsoy (Franky) and Sons Of Jonathas (Xavier). In 2009 we were informed the band was working on a reunion. Guitarist Xavier Carrion prefered not take part of it, but the band actually surprised friends and enemies by selling out the AB in Brussels six times in a row early 2010. At that time American guitarist Mikey Doling already joined the band to replace Carrion. The enthusiasm of band and audience is so infectious, they even released a new record with ‘Feed Em With A Brick’. The album received gold in Belgium and a sell-out tour through the club circuit brings about 9.000 fans to our Belgian concert halls. We still have some more superlatives to describe what this band meant in the metal landscape over the past two decades, but we are especially pleased, after years of insistence, they will finally play our stage! And speaking for ourselves we might suppose the circle is round because for Channel Zero it all started in 1990 at the infamous thrash club Alcatraz in Ghent, which we are still using the name from.

We have to be honest, we just love Vicious Rumors. But could we say otherwise about a band with not less than four (!!) classic albums. No matter how you look at it, the late eighties and early nineties, this band from the Bay Area is radiating pure class. Records among ‘Digital Dictator’, ‘Vicious Rumors’, ‘Welcome To The Ball’ and ‘Word Of Mouth’ are some precious jewels for many metal fans, and this is not a form of misplaced nostalgia but tough reality. And although we still like to make reference to Carl Albert, one of the major voices in the rich history of heavy metal, we need to tell you it is the synergy between its characteristic, but oh so beautiful voice and the powerful melodic metal that causes numerous great moments. Plenty of memorable songs but enumerate them all would be too much distracted. ‘Word Of Mouth’ (1994) appears somewhat unfortunate at a time when the genre moves in a downward spiral, but when singer Carl Albert dies in a car accident in 1995 many people think the band is finished. It’s Geoff Thorpe (since 1979 in charge) who turns the page and one year after the dead of Carl Albert he released a new record. Thorpe sings all songs on ‘Something Burning’ as a tribute to his deceased friend, but on ‘Cyberchrist’ from 1998 we hear a worthy newcomer with Brian O Connor. Nobody can, and wants to forget Albert but it may be said that O Connor is doing a great job with VR. People are coming and going within Vicious Rumors and Thorpe’s pay list with musicians looks already impressive. There is a common thread and it’s Thorpe himself. It seeks to honour the man that he tirelessly kept searching for musicians and moreover he continues touring. Venues are getting smaller but the passion is still growing. ‘Warball’ (2006) and ‘Razorback Killers’(2011) are kicking ass again. The band returns to their ‘old’ sound and are ear smashing on both albums. For some years now there is even a permanent occupation and Thorpe seems to have found some inner peace. Two years ago when the band played in our tent we had some kind of shame all over. Although Vicious Rumors played one hell of a show, we felt the band actually earned a spot on the main stage. We promised ourselves the band would get a second chance, and even it have lasted two years, we guarantee Vicious Rumors will get what they deserve. And to use the words from Thorpe himself: ‘Hell yes, Vicious Rumors is doing time at Alcatraz!!!!’
