Happy New Year and welcome to the latest charity news.

The top of the year is always a good time to reflect and I am particularly pleased about the important contribution the charity has made to the cause of outdoor learning in this area; its role in developing effective woodland activities for peoples' wellbeing; and also in securing the management of large areas of local woodland.

This work is all in line with the principles of the Forest of Avon Community Forest, which still hold true today and if you are interested in the future of Community Forestry, please attend the annual conference in Birmingham on the 23rd March.

Please read on for a summary of the charity's most recent work.

Jon Clark, Executive Director, 13th January, 2017.

Our recent work has included

Over the last 3 months our work has included:

  • Completing our 2016 programme of accredited Forest School and First Aid training courses and producing our 2017 training programme. Since 2011, the charity has professionally trained 145 Forest School Leaders and provided accredited training to 406 people: an important contribution to outdoor learning in Bristol, Avon and beyond;
  • Completing our Dementia Wellbeing pilot project for Bristol Dementia Partnership and based on this, being contracted to run a new project with them in 2017/18;
  • Promoting free tree packs to 74 primary schools in Bristol and Avon for the Woodland Trust;
  • Reviewing tree planting opportunities in primary school grounds in Bristol, Avon and Swindon, linked to a potential Community Forest tree planting scheme, funded by Defra;
  • Providing woodland management skill training for Friends Groups for the Malago Valley and the Kingsweston Estate in Bristol; and Splatts Abbey Wood in South Gloucestershire, funded by the OVO Foundation;
  • Completing Forestry Commission Woodland Management Plans for 3 woodland owners, updating 3 others and discussing 3 more. Our work means that over 850ha woodland is now making an improved contribution to biodiversity, landscape, recreation, pollution management, mitigation of climate change and more;
  • Securing Awards for All Lottery grant funding to lay the hedgerows, improve access and information at The Retreat community woodland; securing funding (details to follow) for a veteran tree training and recording project;
  • Continuing to grow our presence on Twitter & Facebook and posting regular tree & woodland news on our website (curated by Emeritus Professor Bill Scott); and
  • Running our latest fruit tree order which ends on 1st March, 2017.

There are many great ways to support our work:

The charity recently received a legacy for native trees, an important endorsement of our role locally. If you interested in leaving a legacy, please let me know at: jonclark@forestofavontrust.org
