August 14, 2017Register now to attend the Last Lecture at Homecoming!A Career in Research: How life experiences can shape our interests and determine the direction of our research Dr. Joseph Rasmussen’s (Biology) research into the effects of pollution on water systems has challenged what was then taken as the conventional wisdom. “Science is a vast jungle of interrelated subjects and disciplines, and many young people, though interested in science, have difficulty imagining how they would fit in and make an original contribution, amidst the bewildering variety of ill-defined options,” he says. Dr. Rasmussen's talk will take a journey from his childhood and adolescence experiences to show how his drive for finding solutions no one has ever thought of evolved through transdisciplinary research in the sciences. Thoughts of an Accidental Accountant Describing herself as an accidental accountant, Sonya von Heyking (BMgt '03) (Management), takes a look outside of her vocation to lessons we all need a refresher in, reflecting back on a life and career that is peppered with triumphs and tragedies. “I believe that the central question, 'what wisdom would you try to impart to the world if you knew it was your last chance?' demands humility, care, and unabashed honesty,” she says. Sonya has written regular columns for College and University Auditor, the international journal for university internal audit professionals, was an invited speaker at several professional conferences throughout North America, and was awarded the CPA Early Achievement Award in 2012. In the headlinesCongratulations to Board of Governors Research Chair, Dr. Paul L. Vasey (Psychology) who recently sat down with Playboy to discuss his research and what it's like to travel around the world studying the development and evolution of male same-sex sexual attraction in humans. Read the article here. Dr. John von Heyking's (Political Science) book, “The Form of Politics,” will be the subject of a roundtable discussion (“author meets his critics”) at the upcoming Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association in San Francisco over the Labour Day Long weekend. Roundtable discussions are organized only for books that members of the profession regard as noteworthy. In this case, there will be scholars from Canada, US, and France discussing John's book. Congratulations John! Inspiring Lights - A journey to health & higher learning; Chloe McNamee (BHSc '15)When alumna, current student and new staff member, Chloe McNamee (BHSc ’15) (Wellness & Recognition) was considering career paths, she wasn’t exactly sure where her future was headed. Knowing her ultimate goal was to help people, Chloe headed west from her home in Brandon, Man., to take her first steps into studying public health at the University of Lethbridge. After finishing her undergrad and now close to completing her masters, Chloe says her experiences at the U of L have helped her shape a bright and promising future in assisting others to be their own biggest health advocate. The AAHKOYINNIMAAN placed in Hall of HonourThe AAHKOYINNIMAAN (Ceremonial Pipe) was placed in the University of Lethbridge Hall of Honour on Wednesday, August 9. Piikani First Nations Elder, Jerry Potts, created and engraved the pipe with a pronghorn for the University of Lethbridge’s 50th anniversary. “During our 50th anniversary year, the U of L is honoured to receive the ceremonial pipe,” says Dr. Mike Mahon, U of L president and vice-chancellor. “In the years ahead, the pipe will serve as a symbol of the special relationship that exists between First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples and the University.” Joining Elder Potts was Elder Francis First Charger and Dr. Leroy Little Bear (BASc (BA) ’72, LLD ’04) in a short prayer prior to the pipe being placed in the Hall of Honour. A special thank you to Kirsten Meiszinger and the U of L Art Gallery staff who assisted with the display. Fire alarm testingFire alarm speaker testing for the new system being installed in the 1st Choice Savings & Wellness Centre will take place on August 18 and 19. Sounding of test tones and broadcasting of test voice messages will be undertaken in CSW between 5 - 9 a.m. on Thursday and Friday (August 17 and 18) to limit the impact on building users. During this testing it will be indicated by voice message that this is a test and no action needs to be taken. Users should expect the testing to be loud and continuous during this time period.
