The video topics include the flexible design of spaces, accessibility of the development, upgrading of cultural spaces, meeting the needs of Coffs Harbour as a growing city, and the benefits of including council offices and chambers in the building. All of the project videos can be viewed at the Heart of Coffs website or on our Facebook Page. Re-imagining our libraries Libraries are changing, becoming more flexible and responsive to the needs of their users. Each library reflects the unique nature of their community, with libraries providing all sorts of lending services – not only limiting themselves to books, magazines, audiobooks, DVDs and CDs, but expanding their lending ranges to toys, tools, seeds and even baking tins! Did you know that Coffs Harbour libraries lend out ukuleles? A: The cost of refurbishing existing properties is not competitive when compared with building a new, greenfields space that can incorporate multiple cultural and civic amenities and more useable space for the community. Q: Do the green panels on the building facade offer any function? A: In the design work so far, the green panels on the building façade are made of glazed terracotta, and their function is to catch the light throughout the day and across the year – externally, this creates a bright and vibrant effect in the street scape, and internally, these panels act as large, vertical sunshades, protecting the building from the sun, but still letting in light. Some of your questions cannot be answered until we move further into detailed design, but at this stage, the schematic design of the building shows the panels as fixed structures. Q: It’s great to see an increase in the size of the museum and library, could we please have the relevant information on the gallery? A: The new gallery will have more than three times the space of the current gallery (619m2 compared with the current size of 198m2). There will be the capacity to host multiple exhibitions at the one time and showcase a more diverse range of works. There will be more space, more separate galleries and either a designated space for local artists or a commitment in the program to exhibiting local artists.
