THE 70|30 DIFFERENCE! 70% TREATMENT + 30% PRODUCT = 100% RESULTS! IN THIS AUGUST ISSUE: Learn about our new PRP treatment for Hair Loss What to Wear and When to Wear It: A Skin Care Guide Hull Lotta Love The Sun Spot: Sunscreen: Getting Enlightened About Sunscreen Staff Spotlight: Kendall Key See our new TV commercial for Clinical Trials! Specials and Invitations KENDALL HAS A HULL LOTTA LOVE FOR VBEAM!! Kendall has a Hull Lotta Love for the Vbeam Perfecta laser! This laser treats all things RED: rosacea, broken blood vessels, spider veins, warts, redness associated with psoriasis and acne...let’s just say it can handle most things. I use this laser a lot for broken blood vessels around the nose or on the cheeks. It can make a huge difference in the underlying redness in your skin. It is not a one-and- done type treatment, meaning that best results are achieved by a series of treatments. I also love to use this laser on old acne scars that are still red or redness on the neck associated with sun damage. Most laser treatments are best done in the fall as to avoid sun exposure while healing, but depending on the location of the area treated may be fine any time of year. If you would like to know more about the Vbeam Perfecta laser and what it could do for you, call us for a consultation! Getting Enlightened About Sunscreen By: Colton Little Sweet, sweet summertime! For some that means lying out by the pool or going on fun vacations to tropical getaways. To others it may mean peeling your skin off a leather car seat, or sweating even inside your house. The sun can be one of your body's greatest tools toward a healthier lifestyle, but it can also be a huge menace toward your skin. However, like most stories there are several sides to it. Let’s take a look at some quick facts that most people consider to be true; they may need to be “enlightened!” 1. Chemicals in sunscreen cause cancer. 2. Sun damage can only occur on hot and sunny days. 3. People with darker skin tones are naturally protected from the sun. 4. Tanning beds are safer than sunlight exposure. Summer can be fun, but always protect yourself from the harmful UV rays and don’t ever skip sunscreen again! YOUR POINT OF VIEW MATTERS TO US! By: Kendall Key, PA-C We have all gone through a time in our lives where we have either wondered, “Why is there so much more hair in my hairbrush,” “my hair used to feel/look so much thicker,” or “where is all this hair coming from?!” Hair loss affects roughly 40 million men (yes, with an M) and 25 million women in the United States. It's a big deal. Losing your hair can be terrifying, even if you know what is causing it. On that note, let’s talk about some of the common causes of hair loss, because frankly, there isn’t enough space on this page to discuss them ALL. The more common causes of hair loss are imbalances of hormones like estrogen/testosterone, thyroid irregularities, stress (physical/physiological/mental), trauma (pulling the hair), and most commonly, genetics. In order to determine the type of hair loss a patient may have several tests including blood tests, or biopsies are also useful. These tests can pinpoint or eliminate causes so that the proper treatment can be started. There are various treatment options available. Obviously, if you have any blood irregularities that can be corrected, that is step one. Most other causes of hair loss can be treated with good nutrition, vitamin supplementation that helps promote hair growth, oral medications (finasteride), and now platelet-rich plasma injections, otherwise known as PRP. PRP injections use the platelets from your own blood to stimulate hair growth at the follicle. This in combination with micro-needling can stimulate the absolute best environment for hair follicle development, and thus equate more hair growing. Typically, if you are new to our practice or have never been evaluated for hair loss, we will advise you be seen by one of our medical providers to rule out any of the afore-mentioned causes before treating. Once that is done, you are all set! The entire procedure takes roughly an hour. We make sure we have good before and after photos, discuss any and all questions you may have related to the procedure, and go through a thorough medical history to make sure that PRP injections are the best option for you. If a recommendation of PRP treatments is made, then we will draw your blood and have start spinning it down. This spinning mechanism, at its precise speed and duration of time, is what allows us to separate the hair “fertilizing” platelets from the rest of your blood. We will then inject this liquid into your area of hair loss and follow that with some micro-needling We will then see you back periodically for follow up treatments and pictures. For maximum growth we recommend the Viviscal Professional line of hair products, including their supplements, shampoo/conditioner, and hair elixir. If you would like to discuss your hair loss and determine if you are a good candidate for PRP treatment, feel free to schedule an appointment with one of our providers. What to Wear and When to Wear It: A Skin Care Guide By: Cheryl Hood, Licensed Medical Aesthetician As an Aesthetician, I'm often asked the proper order to apply skin care and which products to use. Although there are several variations and great products out there, these are my recommendations to achieve the best skin possible. 1. Cleanse Good, clean skin is so important and a step that is often overlooked or rushed through. Dirt and makeup left on the skin can cause irritation or breakouts. Using a makeup remover, particularly at night, is a very effective way to prep the skin for cleansing. I recommend Avene Micellar Lotion, using it on a cotton pad all over your face to lift makeup and dirt. Follow that with a gentle cleanser, such as Elta Gentle Enzyme Cleanser, Hull Calming Foam, SkinMedica Facial Cleanser or Obagi Foaming Gel or Gentle Cleanser. Adding a rotating brush or a Clarisonic cleaning brush will assure a thorough cleaning and also helps with pores and blackheads. 2. Exfoliate Using an exfoliant is a great way to remove dead skin cells to aid in the absorption of products. However, it is important not to overdo it and cause skin irritation. SkinMedica AHA/BHA cleanser is a personal favorite and can be used daily on most skin types. Those with sensitive skin can use it 2-3 times a week. 3. Toner Applying a toner is a great way to restore pH balance and removing any last traces of dirt or makeup. Some of the best are Obagi Toner or SkinMedica Equalizer Toner. 4. Treatment The most active product is applied to bare, clean skin. These include vitamin C, retinol or benzoyl peroxide for those with acne. It is best to use vitamin C during the day and retinol at night. SkinCeuticals C.E. Ferulic is a great antioxidant to use during the day and SkinMedica Retinol Complex before bed. Obagi Clenziderm Benzoyl Peroxide is great for acne breakouts and should be applied at night. If sun damage is an issue, adding SkinMedica Lytera Pigment Correction would help diminish any hyperpigmentation you may have. 5. Moisturizer/Eye Cream An oil-free or light moisturizer is great for most skin types, such as SkinMedica Replenishing Hydrate, or HydraFacial Purmoist. Those with dry skin can use SkinMedica HA5 or TNS Ceramide Cream day and night. Eye cream can be applied morning and night and only takes a small amount. SkinMedica TNS Eye Repair, Biopelle Stem Cell Eye Cream, or Obagi Elastiderm are all great for fine-lines, wrinkles, and dark circles. 6. Sunscreen Sunscreen should be applied during the day, unless it is in the foundation. A clear sunscreen is applied under makeup that does not have sunscreen. Another option is to use a tinted sunscreen in place of foundation. My recommendations are Elta Md 46 clear or tinted, Obagi Sunshield, or SkinMedica Essential Defense 32. Make sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which protects against both UVA and UVB rays. There are so many great products available, but these are a few of my favorites that I would recommend for most skin types. I can’t stress how important it is that you ensure the products you are using are authentic and authorized. Buying from online retailers does not always mean you are purchasing a legitimate product or even a product that is not expired. We sell everything I mentioned in The Skin Solution store, as well as many other medical-grade products. As always, you can schedule a free skin care consultation with any of our Aesthetic providers to discover what is best for your skin. This year I attended the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, or SDPA, conference in Seattle, Washington. This five-day conference was full of information regarding various dermatology conditions and the newest treatment options available for them from experts in the field of dermatology. I love these conferences, as they are a great way to learn how other providers may be treating certain conditions, what kind of results they may be getting by treating one way or the other, and of course getting to network with my fellow colleagues in the field. This year there was a record number of attendees making it information overload for this PA! I love learning all of this info and getting to come back and discuss it with my fellow providers and patients. It's a great way to stay “on top” of the new and upcoming...not to mention, Seattle was not too shabby either! I was fortunate enough to have my mom tag along with me. Neither of us had been to Seattle before and we were pleasantly surprised by the experience. Pike's Place Market was bustling with all of its vendors: daily made Greek yogurt, cheese, doughnuts....it was this foodie's PARADISE! I seriously loved the cheese so much that I have since ordered it, ha ha! The Space Needle was a must as well as the beautiful Chihuly Museum. All around, a great time was had! Call Today and Book Now and Take Advantage or our August Special! Missed Appointment Policy We have recently amended our Missed Appointment Policy. We try to contact all of our patients at least 24 hours before their scheduled appointment to remind them of the date and time. If you can't keep a scheduled appointment, please inform us by telephone at least 24 hours in advance to avoid a "no show" fee. Missing an appointment scheduled for an hour or less will incur a $50 fee and missing an appointment scheduled for more than one hour will incur a $100 fee per hour. You will be unable to schedule a new appointment or receive any other services until this fee is paid in full. Thank You! We at Hull Dermatology & Aesthetics are thankful for all of our patients. To our existing patients, I say thank you. For our new patients that are just joining our family, I welcome each of you. My staff and I
are dedicated to providing outstanding medical and cosmetic dermatology for the Northwest Arkansas area and beyond. |
