Small Business Institute Launches Big Picture Ideas

Inline Image

Small businesses can be big business for southern Alberta – that’s the message two University of Lethbridge Faculty of Management researchers are sending as they launch a new institute that will focus on the specific needs of small businesses.

On Jan. 17, The U of L and its Faculty of Management will officially launch the Small Business Institute (SBI), the brainchild of Dr. Gordon Hunter and Dan Kazakoff, two veteran management faculty members with several decades of combined experience in small business consulting, management and education between them.

The focus of the Institute’s investigations will be on privately-held small businesses varying from start-ups to multi-generational ownership.

In addition to entrepreneurship and family-owned businesses, other aspects of their investigation will include franchises, non-participating family members, succession and sustainability.

The SBI is unique in that it will focus on Lethbridge, southern Alberta and other locations. Get the full story here.

The Tomorrow Project is a research initiative of Alberta Health Services, Cancer Care.

By 2013, researchers want to enrol 50,000 Albertans, ages 35 to 69, who have never had cancer.

People interested in joining the study are invited to a temporary study centre at Eagles Hall, 631 13 St. North, from Jan. 16 to 21.

Participants will be asked questions about their health and lifestyle, have some physical measurements taken and give small amounts of urine and blood, or saliva. Appointments are necessary and will take about one hour.

For information and to join the study, visit www.in4tomorrow.ca or call toll-free 1-877-919-9292. There is also a mail-in option for individuals who are interested in joining the Tomorrow Project but live too far away from a study centre.

Security / Safety notice -- Fire Ban in River Valley and on Campus

Effective immediately and until further notice a fire ban has been placed on all open fires in the River Valley area, which includes the University of Lethbridge property.

Excluded are the stoves at the John Martin Centre, the fire pit at the Elks Compound and any fire pit at a private residential dwelling.

Common sense would suggest that any fire has the potential to become problematic given the unpredictable nature of the wind.

Visit this website for more information.
