The month of May is one of our favorites because it is dedicated to Physical Fitness and Sports. Physical activity is essential to good health. It is recommended that adults get approximately 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity 5 days per week. Regular physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, strengthen muscles and bones and even reduce your risk for heart disease, diabetes, some cancers, and obesity. In addition to your physical health, regular physical activity has been proven to improve your mental health.
You do not need a gym membership or regularly scheduled workouts to increase or maintain physical activity. Adding physical activity to your routine can be as easy as upping the intensity and frequency of your everyday tasks. Raking leaves, cleaning the house, walking the dog, going for a swim, etc. The easiest way to add physical activity is to do things that you love to do! Take a dance or aerobic exercise class, start a walking club in your neighborhood or with your friends, start riding your bike instead of taking your car, etc.
A physical therapist can help you assess your fitness level, fitness goals and even provide you with a screening to help you prevent injury as you embark on your new journey. Already a professional with your physical activity? An injury prevention screening is still appropriate to ensure proper mechanics, avoid injury and maintain gains with the physical activities you already do. Call us today to get moving!
